Matching headstocks look great with rosewood.

With maple, I'm not yet convinced.

Funny you mentiond that... to me, more or less general, I like matching headstock on rosewood but prefer non-matching on maple... both combinations yield the lowest number of different colours, that's probably what I like -- not too many different colours over the whole instrument.

why do they scare you?

i dunno. ghosts, boogie man, jason freddy - no problem. matching headstock - i go runnin'

honestly, its just not my thing. one thing i can think of is that i like my guitars and basses to have something "light" about em. i honestly play my brighter colored instruments more. so i think its got something to do with that... the natural headstock is nice n simple and i guess i gravitate towards that
