O.K., I've read the "new 2 P.U." sticky thread and would still like to ask.................(please)..

For the HH Stingray, what switch positions (1,2,3,4,5) would be closest to a J-bass sound, and then a P-bass sound? (I'm sorry, I just can't follow the "outer coils series, inner coils parallel" thingy stuff. I have problems with 1 volume and 1 tone knob!

I'm pretty new to bass and wouldn't be able to tell by just listening to the different positions (because I don't know the sound difference between a "P" and "J"!). Please pardon my ignorance.

I gather from other posts in here that a P-Bass sound is close in position 4?

Position 1 (closest to the neck) would be the most P-bass-ish sound, while 2 and 4 would be more J-bassish with somewhat different colorings between the settings. Not a stinker in the batch, I assure you!

one way to think about the positions is as follows:

position 1: stingray sound
position 2: some flavor of a jazz bass
position 3: killer, defined, awesome tome with ALL coils on
position 4: another flavor of jazz
position 5: p bass sound

Thanks guy's, thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

You're right about all positions sounding great. There really is no bad sounding one. Also, I totally agree with you about position 3 phatduckk, it is an awesome tone. :D

pos 3 is my current fav for a nice articulate slap tone :)

and dont forget... the preamp on those basses is awesome. a lil tweak of any of the knobs and yove got a whole new world of sound

enjoy!!!

That's gonna be my first up-fall. How to find my sound with an HH Sterling. I can't wait. Input would be great about what the settings will do, but I can't wait to try 'em myself!

I've found my HH Sterling is pretty much stuck on position 4 (the 2 inner coils). Prior to getting the bass, I thought I was gonna be using position 2 (2 outer coils) but not so. Positions 1 and 2 get used, but not nearly as much as position 4....

After owning my HH for roughly three months, here is my take on the tonal options.

Position 1: Classic SR.

Position 2: Similar to 4, but punchier in the upper mids. More of a J/J sound.

Position 3: This one is hard for me describe. I would say it is the most hi-fi of the positions. The high end has a presence not found on any other position. Probably not gonna be used too much by me for the time being.

Position 4: Once again, similar to 2, but has a rounder tone, with a tad bit more lower mid presence. I actually get more of a P/J config vibe from this setting.

Position 5: I have had a hard time getting myself to try this position. But, I have never tried it for any significant amount of time on my main gigging/recording rig (SVT4 and PR410HLF). My practice amp is junky and most of my experimentation has been done at home on it.

I have recorded with this bass on two projects. I have used positions 1, 2 and 4. Position 1 has had the most time in use (my main band is more rock oriented). Postions 2 and 4 are getting more use in a project I am doing with a singer/songwriter friend. He writes very good poppy sounding tunes and the tone of position 4 has worked really well in filling out the bottom end of the recordings.

All in all, I really feel I can grab this bass and have it fit all of my needs.

I would have to say that position 5 on any of the HH SRs and Sterlings sounds like a P bass with that MM flavor. I recently recorded using position 5 for a more "rockish" song and it did the job VERY nicely.

StingRayzor pretty much said it all for the other positions though. Even though I still use position 1 70% of the time, I love having this tonal variety.

And with an HS on the way, there won't be a gig around I couldn't dial a good tone for.
