2 Questions about Axis & EVH Models

I was at my local EBMM dealer the other day and there was a used P####y guitar that looked just like an Axis SS. The only noticable difference was the name "Wolfgang" and it had the EVH logo. How was that guitar company able to copy a EBMM model? and What is the differnce between the Axis SS and the P#####y Wolfgang EVH?

Look closely and you will see where the difference is: Headstock design body shape. There you go.
If you want to buy one of the guitars let your ear decide and buy the axis.
If you need a floyd buy the regular axis.

the wolfie isnt flat topped like the ebmm guitars but arched ,though the specials which came later were.also without being elitist I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a wolfgang with the nice tops seen on evh/axis guitars

The Wolfgangs were also only offered w/ flamed tops, they stopped making quilt tops after the 1st year of production. However, I have seen some superb flamed tops on Wolfgangs (including mine )

The other significant differences are neck profile (Wolfs are wider & flatter) & pickups (EVH/Axis pickups are a little less "hot" & have better clarity)

The one I am looking at is solid black like the one on your profile pic. It has a birdseye maple neck. The guitar plays well but I did notice the neck was a little fatter. I was just wondering if these were good guitars. If so, I may be able to get a good deal on it.

I've owned three Wolfgangs, and while they were great guitars, my Axis blows them away.

I got my Axis on eBay for a steal (not much more than that Wolfie is selling for). If you're going to put your money towards a guitar, make it a EBMM.

Well the neck fatter? Hmm rounder in shape and a different radius, but if it is set up well it plays like heaven. More wood more sound.
BTW my guitar is transblack see my signatur at the bottom

1. Set-ups are pretty individual while neck shape is constant. I would get whatever neck felt most comfortable to play and set up to taste (before buying - yes - you can make the store do this or do it yourself - I do).

2. "More wood more sound", what the heck does that mean?!????

The wolfgang uses a 15" neck radius. The EBMM is more like a 10". The Wolfgang neck is fatter, especially at the heel.

Build wise, body wood is the same for both - basswood with a maple cap. Neck wood is quarter-sawn maple(PV) vs birdseye(EBMM).

Seriously, try one of each out if you can. I think you'll come back to the Axis.

I've read on a few occasions, solid color wolfgangs, didn't actually have a maple top in some cases. Just pure basswood. Not all, probably not most, but some got out without the maple top.

That could just be urban legend type stuff too... but once you hear it a few times it sticks.

actually the solid color guitars with arch top where ones with a not so good figuring. this is why the rumors and conversation have always flown as to why would ever leave ebmm as they were so much better guitars. just get a axis as the wolfgang as to much hartley input in it. imean why would ed change the neck style when the ebmm was a copy of his favorite . get a axis.

Thanks guys! I went back to the store yesterday and played both of them. You guys are right the Axis feels, sounds, and looks much better to me. I am putting one on lay away this week.

the day i first got to play a wolfgang and an axis side by side was an amazing day. i couldnt believe the gulf in class between the two, quite something. the axis and the super sport are just tremendous guitars, flawless stuff folks. I used to love the look of the wolfgangs, especially in guitar mag ads, nice glossy pics, then i'd go and play one and would be let down time and again, just couldnt put my finger on why i didnt like them, just felt wrong, yet i'd lusted after one for so long. not any more!

The flat top solid colors are straight basswood. I don't know about the archtops.

I think the Wolfgang's pickups are too hot. I also know that the bridge and neck pickups are the same p-up. They don't seem very well balanced.

Great choice on the Axis. They don't get much better.

For the record, the bridge & neck pups on a Wolfgang are definitely not the same pickup.

Okay,

I had been told by several people that the neck p-up was essentially the bridge p-up with the pole pieces going towards the neck.

Guess I was misinformed.

I had a Wolfgang and sold it and bought another Axis. Nuff said!
