Hi guys :)

I have found a very beautiful 2006 white Stingray V with
mapleneck at a shop online. I know there are 2008 models
on the way into the store and my question is:

Are there any big differences between the 2006 and 2008 models ?
I have read something about ceramic pickups going alnico but is
there more ? Any differences to the construction, b-string quality etc ?

Is it worth the wait to buy the 2008 compared to the 2006 ?

If the 2006 model are as good as the newer one i think i will buy
it. Just help me decide

Hope you all have a nice weekend :)

As far as I'm aware, the only difference is the pickup magnets from ceramic to alnico.

Everything else should be the same. As long as it says Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 5 it will sound and play great.

Someone said something about no single coil mode in the newer ones...is that true? Apparently more of an 'enhanced series'?

I say grab the 2006 with the ceramic pups while there still around

I have a 2007 Stingray with the Ceramic pups and I love it

If I had to get another one I would hunt down a ceramic pup model just cause I like the formula

It's true, according to the schematics that are on the MM site. There is no single-coil setting on the new single-H SR5s and therefore no phantom coil. The middle setting on the switch is called "series with filter". I assume it is something like the "enhanced series" setting on the single-H 20th anniversary SR5s.

It should be noted that the single-H Sterling5s do have the single-coil setting.

If I am not mistaken the 2008 models also come with a compensated nut.

FAO Zakduarte: Don't forget that you might have problems wiring a signle H with the phantom coil in a non single coil bass setup, because the circuitry is different hence you might need to source a complete wiring circuitry to match, and if you still want to go ahead and get an original ceramic single H in white I have one I can sell you, I don't need coz I've fitted an aftermarket alnico p/up in my 2000 SR5, contrary to your preference I like the sound of the alnico, We are all different after all. ;)

The 2008 on the "middle position" is MAGNIFIQUE ;) believe me!
Its warmer than the "normal" serial mode, less agressive and a bit fuller,

Hello i'm a pro bass player from France ! I love my 2007 SR5 and it has alnico pickups and the enhanced middle switch tone ! Is it a proto pickup ? since in 2007 they used to put ceramic ones ? Regards

No need to necropost). I guess nobody remember the exact time around 2007-2008 when they swiched SR5 back to alnico. So I think you just have one of the first present alnico SR5s. And you can contact customer service any time wo they will answer your question.
