I hope this isn't a silly question, and a search didn't find what I was looking for. I just played a 20th Anniversary SR5 HS today and totally love the tones - for reference, I play a SR4 HH which I also love, but this one blew me away. Is there something special about the preamp on the 20th anniversary model, or tonewoods perhaps? If I we're to order a SR4 HS (those new Dargies are looking pretty sweet), would I be able to expect to get pretty much the same tones (obviously minus the Low B)?

Well there was a big deal about the mahogany toneblock, which is placed under the pickups, and the top is maple, so that un and of itself could account for some of it. I believe they also tweaked the pre a bit... the middle seting on the switch is series w/filter as opposed to singl coil w/dummy coil.

nope.... you'd be missing the maple top and the mahogany tone block.

i believe the 20th SR5 has alnico pickups just like the SR4 does so electronics-wise you're close, but the tone woods aren't gonna be the same so you wont "nail" the tone.

your best bet is to wait for a BFR SR4 to make an appearance.

top notch quality too... I still can't get over how nice the finish is on my 20th SR5 HH :)
