philiprst-----yeah thats exactly the point I was makin------I am definitely comin from the strat side of the street. I'm glad to hear an LP guys insight into this discussion. The point I was makin(not very eloquently) that this is as close to an LP type sound you'll get on a bolt on type guitar. There's no way to replicate the low end of the LP without the mass of the body and the set neck absolutely has an effect on the LP sound. Your point about amps is indeed very important---I try to check out a guitar initially with just a simple clean tube amp like the f**ner junior set flat so I can really hear what the guitar is producing. I'm currently lookin for a good crunchy amp for dirty rhythm and leads---I have a hot rod deluxe I love for clean stuff---but the distortion in the amp is crap. I got used to 2 amps for clean and dirty----once you go there you'll never find just one amp that does it all!!! BTW--the switchblade looks very interesting---lookin 4 one to try...........

Paul, we must be twins because, as it happens, I have tried the H&K Switchblade a couple of times recently and it is one of the very few amps that has seriously tempted me. The control capabilities combined with a tube amp are truly amazing and the in-built digital effects are a useful bonus. Being able to tap a button on the footswitch and recall 128 different channel, mid, bass, treble and gain and volume settings is truly liberating.

Of course, like any one amp, it cannot exactly reproduce a Fender, Marshall or Mesa amp. But, it gets very close and having all those tones under your feet is, in my opinion, worth the slight loss in fidelity.

Thanks for the kind comment Keith.

Talking of amps: I tried out one of these new Hughes and Kettner Switchblade amps while I was in London on vacation. I was very impressed with its versatility and its ability to store as a preset virtually every setting on the front panel. Brilliant. Anyone else heard one of these?

Yes , its a very good amp , you should try the H & K - TRILOGY , this head sounds great - i think that a midi option in the amp its nice especially if you are using multi FX that work with midi.......this is saving you that dancing on 2 floor boards , and like that you can switch the amp channels + adding whatever effect you wants with one foot touch - its great on stage ,and i think that this head also won the best head for 2006

the diffrence between them is 100 euro's

I decided to buy this head , im just waiting to my MM to come in the end of september and then ill have totally new equipment

shimi, the Trilogy is nice with 4 preamp tubes but, as far as I can make out, is a lot less capable when it comes to control features. It seems that you can only control, via midi, the selection of channels, toggle on/off the boost and sparkle and turn off/on the FX loop . I guess you need a separate midi pedal for all that. There seems to be no control of the EQ settings for each channel. I think the same is true for the high-end ENGLs that have midi control. It's for that very reason that I would prefer the Switchblade.....

By the way, this probably explains the different number of tubes in the Trilogy/Switchblade preamp. My guess is that the EQ (tone) stack is solid state in the Switchblade which is probably the only practical way to have the EQ settings under midi control.

The selection of channels - you can control from the board that comes with the amp normally like any other amp

the midi give you all the rest which is a lot of posibilities .......... but the great idea is to combined multi fx that have a midi option ...... which means instead of buying the switchable amp and get some basic fx you can buy the trilogy and with one floorboard which contains many fx+ many posibilties ,you can control your amp , for example im using Boss gt-6 that have a midi in + out , i can change anything and recall any setting from my amp through my gt pedals + adding to the same setting / patch from the amp all the extra that i needs from the Boss gt , so basiclly you gets "naked" amp no reverb no effects etc'...........but its a pure amp !!! but on the other hand you combined the multi that will do the job for you , so you still stays with one board on the floor but this board gives you full controll on your amp , combined those two {any brand you like ofcourse } and you have got endless posibilties of tones for your taste , today i wouldnt go on amp without midi , if they give you the option take it , one day you'll use it - well thats my opinion

switchbalde is a great amp!
i prefer ENGLs tonewise! but youre right. you can only switch basic features. enough for me but maybe not for everyone.

and ENGL is only 150km from here and they are great guys at all. when i need service i bring them into the factory. thats a nice feature.
greetings
