Interested in the 20th Anniversary Stingray 5 but don't know if I want the H or HH. No place to give them a road test. Getting both is not an option.

Can I dial in the precise single H tone using the switch position on the HH and thus turn it into a single H?

Do I get that new "enhanced parallel setting mode" that the single H has with the HH?

How does the Ray HH compare to the Bongo 5 HH tonally? (Alnico + Ash + Mahogony) vs (Neod + Basswood + Whoop A:eek::eek:)

Which the Ray is the better slap bass HH or H (I assume H but I could be wrong)?

Thanks for the input...

2 h are a bit hotter interms of signal out put. also a little fuller in sound.but the single h have been the back bone of the company for three and a half decades. stanky is right....flip a coin.

1) I think so, and technically you should, but we all hear things differently.

2) No, only on the single H. I wouldn't describe it as enhanced..I would call it "New"

3) They are different animals.

4) Apples and Oranges. Which do you like better?

Q: Can I dial in the precise single H tone using the switch position on the HH and thus turn it into a single H?

A: My dual HH sounds an awful lot like a single H when I've got the pickup selector set to just the bridge pickup. Any differences in tone are minimal and might just be the difference between individual instruments. Dargin's got a good point on hearing things differently - people actually buy Britney Spears disks.

Q: Do I get that new "enhanced parallel setting mode" that the single H has with the HH?

A: Listen to the relatively low audio quality on the video from last Friday here at my house. Oldtoe is fooling around with my 20th single H and it is the Voice of Your Deity's Name Here.

Q: How does the Ray HH compare to the Bongo 5 HH tonally? (Alnico + Ash + Mahogony) vs (Neod + Basswood + Whoop A)

A: Different animals, indeed. The Bongo has some very complex midrange stuff going on that I just don't hear anywhere else. I, of course, feel the need to have both basses.

Q: Which the Ray is the better slap bass HH or H (I assume H but I could be wrong)?

A: What is this 'slap' thing?

Jack

I got my HH 20th SR5 last Thurs. and it sounds awesome. Using the bridge only it does sound close to a single H. But you also have a few more options with the other P/U. Either way you will not be disappointed. (Watch the Ed Freidland 20th SR5 vid.)

Single H, all the way. That's what my 20th has.
I have regular SR5's in both H and HH, and prefer the H almost all the time.

These are some good comments. Any others? Leaning towards the HH from a versatility standpoint, I like to experiment with many different sounds. Watched Ed Friedlands review on youtube last night. Love that tone!! Waiting to the last minute just like tax time . Tomorrow is the day.

FWIW.... I played a HH 20th 5er last week and it was by far the best sounding (tone wise) bass I have ever played. I honestly thought my wife was going to physically pull it out of my hands. :D Maybe the very high end 15W Fender Rumble helped make it sound so good . I can only imagine how it would sound through my Ampeg stuff.

Seriously, it sounds great. I only compared it to a H Stingray, but the 20th is waaaaayyyy better (and almost a G-note more expensive but absolutely worth it IMO).

I have been playing more and more Fender and Lakland when not playing my Bongo 5 in my metal band, but the 20th is far better than my Lakland 55-02 or MIA Fender Jazz V. I would love to see how a 20th sounds on the gig.:)

Or that you made a Stingray 5 that's just as good as your Bongos.

(Did you watch that video from Friday? Even through those little 5 inch PJ speakers and yes, even with the Acme Flats, that 20th SR5 sounded amazing. And I take no credit for PLAYING it, because it was Ben on the video.)

the of course I played the Bongo all night last night,

Those flats sound great on the 20th SR5. Might have to try that myself, when I get mine.

Nice video too. But, were my eyes deceiving me, or is there an MTD in there somewhere. I know it's OT, but I just wanted to know if it's a 535 or one of those new Z-series?

I'm just curious because when I started looking for a new bass, I was actually gonna go MTD. Untill I played my first SR5 that is :p
