Too many to list.

I think that in general, those who think completely outside the mainstream make the most significant contributions.

Many people become very successful and influential by building better mousetraps. Bill Gates is a perfect example.

Others approach the problem from a different direction. They rethink the whole idea of the mouse and make the mousetrap irrelevant.

Those are the people who change the world.

The area of endeavor can be anything... science, technology, art, music, architecture, politics, human rights, you name it. Different names come up for each. Renaissance men are admirable, but do not necessarily have as significant an impact on the world as those with a single, pure vision.

While I dig what adouglas has to say (usually do), I'm with Bloodfist. ;) Star Wars Kid all the way.

Hey Pzo, how's Vancouver, eh? More important, how's your health?? It's good to see you posting every so often.

I think it's hard to recognize just one person. There have been to many advances and to many technological things that have happened as a result of a group of people. I know usually the head person gets the credit but let's face it, it wasn't a single person responsible for figuring out how to get to the moon or do space exploration. Same with many of the diseases we have found cures for or advancements on to make the people with those diseases that have no cures live a little better.

My personal favorite though is whoever the person was that invented toilet paper. My Grandma said that prior to toilet paper they had to use corn on the cob; that ruined corn on the cob for me from that point on and I still can't figure out which way they wiped with it to get clean...

Fred Hollows is a good one to mention too. His work means that more than 1 million people in developing countries have had their sight saved by a simple $20 procedure.

James Jamerson, at least for bass playing. The guy that invented the skateboard...

Besides that it's hard to say because we do not know how a lot of the ideas of the 20th century will turn out.

I must be honest and patriot, both, and say only one name:

Nikola Tesla, the inventor of Alternate Current! (and some more electro-Technic inventions)

Let us be honest, without AC, we could hardly play our basses today :D especially through powerful PA systems...etc. :p

No need to mention the whole bunch of electronics and gadgets...etc., ...all need somehow AC current to work at the first place! ;)
