I'm not shure which thread I read this in recently, but I think I read somewhere that the order window for the 20th SR5 is gonna close soon. Is this true?

Is that the royal We or the general sentiment of the whole?

Either way, we be pleased to be pleasing.

OK, good to know the deadline. We'll see if I can swing it. I definitely want one, but it's not been a year with bass-buying cash flow.

I "know" I would love the 20th HS. But...If not, I have a feeling the STerling 5 will be awesome too!

Jack, as a dedicated Bongo player (but one who has owned a Sr5 or two, what do you think of the sound? How different is it from, say, Heinz. (which is a late-model sr5, right?)

BP, I am actually speaking from a royal HOLE, but that's a whole 'nother story.

Stretch, Heinz is a late 1999 vintage, so I'm not sure if that's late model or not, but I suppose so, overall.

I tend to think that aural memories are exceptionally iffy. But Heinz kicks some serious ass. Ask Stanky. There are, after Heinz or any really good SR5, only degrees of ass-kicking. I mean, you have a good SR5, you have yourself a very serious bass.

Then it becomes, at some point, what I call 'measurements in the twilight zone'.

But the 20th really does kick it up a notch - maybe four or five notches. Mine is exceptionally pretty, but 'pretty' doesn't change the tonal characteristics so - while I appreciate the beauty - let's all lay that aside.

What you have in the 20th, much like in the 30th SR4, is a combination of the past and the future. All that good stuff you loved plus some novel changes; some might even say 'improvements'.

Once I picked up that 20th in January at the CLB soiree, I knew that - for me - it was the ultimate Stingray 5. Until then, I had tried to tell myself that Heinz and the Dargie HH SR5 were all I really needed. Had I never been exposed to the 20th, I would have been okay. Fate intervened.

Now how different, really, is my 20th from Heinz? Interesting question. BP will tell you that Heinz was the ugliest SR5 to ever escape SLO. No one is going to say that about ANY 20th. So there's the Beauty Factor.

I obviously thought there was enough difference to justify offing one of the most identifiable Stingray 5s to ever exist. Heinz is more of an internet celebrity than I am.

I think I said this before, but it can stand repitition: what the 30th SR4 is to 'regular' Stingrays, the 20th is to 'regular' Stingray 5s. And what I've said about the 30th SR4 is this: Best. Stingray. Ever.

I really do think the 20th is the Best. Stingray 5. Ever.

Maybe the question is, how much do you give up if you just keep your standard SR4 or SR5. Not much, really. The production instruments, to me, are still just as bad-ass as it gets. (Don't even get me started on Bongos.)

But if you want to take that extra step, I'll also say that I think it's completely worth it. Small differences? Sure. Big rewards? Yeah, I think so.

Bovine,

Cool, thanks for the thoughtful reply. We'll see if the cards come up for me to order one. Since playing a Sterling HS I've been thinking that a SR5 HS might be THE killer bass for me, and the 20th that much more so.

So if the cards drop, Pete Dubaldo will get a call, if not, I DO have a very badass trans-orange SR5 (which of course does not officially exist as I've never gotten a #$% picture posted). It's the bass, where whenever I bring 2 basses to the gig, I play the other bass for a song or two, then go "I need the Sr5, and it never relinquishes its spot.

This thread is killing me. I'd love to grab one of these 20ths but it's just not in the cards unless some more money falls in my lap. :( I just got my 30th SR earlier this year, I'm about to grab a MarkBass rig (can't wait, got a blown GK cab), and there's already a Bongo6 on the horizon for next year.
