Just to let you guys know there is a review of the 20th Silo in this months Guitarist. Needless to say it gets a five star "Guitarist Choice" rating.

The last line of the review (by Paul Day) had me a little confused, I quote "Sterling Ball states only 336 will be made" - never seen anything like that before.

Dave

P.S. I went to the launch of Marshall's Vintage Modern amps at the factory in Milton Keynes yesterday - a very very good amp (helped by having Doug Aldrich to demo it for us)

P.P.S If any Dallas go-ers want me to bring a copy of the mag then shout up.

Do you have a scanner ????

I do not find Guitarist in France :(
(but I find Guitar & Bass that is a great mag, far better than the French mags).

Guitarist : is it a good mag ?

Thanks for the info.

Was Jim there? Last time I saw him (Wembley Guitar show) he was looking a bit frail.

Hope the old boy is well. I was lucky enough to spend a bit of time with him at the factory about 15 years ago and I always remember him being an absolute gent.

No he wasnt - he'd taken a bit of a tumble the day before (but was OK).

He was going to be at the dinner for the "artistes" in the evening though.

Victoria (his daughter now the MD of Marshall amps) was there.

It's a good article that and Guitarist is my monthly addiction fix. Certainly my favourite guitar mag.

The 20th actually scored 4 and 1/2 stars though still got the coveted Guitarist Choice award. The only criticism they levelled was that the look of it had lost a little individuality and that it would really suit some single coil sounds as well. Nothing major, and the look thing is purely subjective at the end of the day.

I'm VERY interested in the new Vintage Modern combo so read the review with interest. Look forward to a test drive.

I have my order in for both head and combo. Should be arriving in early December.

Come on down we could pick you up from Luton airport!

Thanks Dave, glad to hear he's still about.

Just watched the Marshall DVD on the new amp range. I have to admit to being a little underwhelmed by what I heard. They didn't really seem to be offering anything particularly new?

Presumably they sounded more impressive at the factory?

Very generous offer m8, but being self employed with 2 young kids means such a trip would be a luxury of time I should be spending with the family!

Still a superb offer though, thanks.

From what I've heard, the VintageModern is to replace the DSL and TSL. The reason being that those contained very small quantities of lead and, to conform with new legislation, had to be either changed or stopped. Marshall seem to have chosen to try something new while making the transition. So the VM isn't in addition to the DSL/TSL, it will rpelace them. That's what I heard anyway.

Really? They seem to be very different animals with the DSL/TSL offering many more options in terms of channel switching etc.

Anyone got any firm info on this?

There will be another new Marshall too, probably in the new year - I cant tell you anything else because I would be shot!

The Vintage Modern sounded great - and unlike a lot of Marshalls reacted very well to volume pot changes.

Are the build quality of the new Marshalls going to be any good? The DSL/TSL seem to have cut quite a few corners in the quality stakes.

AFAIK it is still a pcb based amp, however they certainly arent scrimping on the size of transformers in the Vintage Modern. That and 4 KT66s make a great combination. I guess only time will tell in terms of reliability.

I've been a Guitarist subscriber for years, great mag and they are usually very complimentary of EBMM instruments. Some good coverage recently with the 20th Silo this month and the Stingray HH last month.

There's a Marshall Vintage Modern DVD with this month's issue as well. I've not watched it yet but I'm hoping it'll give a good idea of what the amp's like.

I would love to 'Go back' to Marshall. There is something about the sound that fits in so well with my playing. I would love to know about this amp you are sworn to secrecy about!
