Yesterday I recorded some slap sound samples, EQ set flat, and compared my Sterling HH, StingRay HH and of course 25th A HH. I know, you should never compare apples and oranges. However, I realized that both, the StingRay and Sterling have more attack and openness compared to the 25th A with EQ set flat.

What I like so much about the the 25th A while playing fingerstyle (the "sound of wood", the slightly emphasized low mids and the slight decay) is what makes it a little difficult for me to find a suitable slap sound that has a little of the brilliance my StingRay brings. In addition I note that the treble knob has not that much effect as I am used to by the 3-Band EQs (therefore we have an additional high mid knob that does a good job).
But what about slap-sounds?

The most reasonable approach for me seems setting the preamp in active mode and parallel - and my best guess is to start with the bridge H. What are your thoughts (and EQ settings)?

Thanks and servus!

IME The Reflex with a rosewood board & Mahogany tone block isnt the most suited for slap as you say... the 4 band EQ almost makes it a bit harder but cut both the mids, slightly boost the lows & boost the highs to the heavens.

FRESH Cobalts or Steels & of course you could use your special weapon man... that Zoom B3! They have a slap patch (At least they do on my Zoom MB 60-b) with a graphic EQ before a compressor. Works like a charm for my 70s funk band

OR... just use the best bass you own... the Sterling :)

For studio slap setup:

-both Humbackers in parallel, passive, tone knob full open!!!

For live slap setup:

-use first bass EQ on bridge parallel active to sound good for the fingerstyle in venue You play, ...than when want slap, just switch both Humbackers in parallel ON!!!

Good playin' and have a nice day! ;)

Check mine in passive mode:

When I want to get tappity I just engage the rear H for that stingray vibe. SOmetimes I will toggle between series and parallel while in the rear H 'mode' to see what fits better.

Sterling probably has the edge here, but as to it being the best bass you have....
