Dear Mr. BP, I am very insterested in saving every bit of cash for the future purchase of one of these gorgeous 25th Anniversary basses in the 5 strings option, however I have a question in relation to the headstock, looking at the picture of the headstock (3rd pic) from The Perfect Bass advert (sorry Brandt for using this without permission) I have noticed the presence of a string retainer bar which is not showing (the string retainer) on the pictures displayed on your Music Man Instruments website. My question is, if you allow me to ask, was this a later addition to the design of the headstock and is it also featured on the 5 strings model, and if possible why is it there??

Many Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Oh and sorry if this has been asked before.

Could this have been handled in an e-mail to customer service?

Dear pal, why do you think so? From the very first day BP and Co. started working on these basses, there has been a long going thread where BP would surprise us every day with further details and openly discuss hints on the creation & development of these, which touched a lot of us for the sheer honesty of this company, so why should my question be a private CS issue.

I have read most of the most important parts and I remember when they were talking about different type of pegs but then they couldn't use them in the end, however l don't recall or, it escaped me. whether the angle of the headstock was designed in a way that didn't require retainers, as in the website pics and of course I was curious when I saw it on Brandt's picture.

Here is why I had to ask. what is wrong with that? By the way I did say in the title, Question for BP and Crew only please

Well, I know what it"s for, but since you don't want to hear from any of the knuckleheads I won't tell you.
:p

You're a funny guy adougles, you make me laugh, I'll kill you last, hehehe

just kidding :p

I know what it is there for, of course it is a string retainer, and as it says in the name it retains the strings tension so they don't over skip off the nut, but I thought, and I can be wrong that I read somewhere in that long BP thread that the initial intention was not to have one thanks to the angle of the headstock.

When I stop tonight I will print that thread and read it bit by bit...

Private question on a public forum...kinda like two people whispering in each others' ears at a party. Certainly not an offense punishable by death, but it could be considered rude. Email probably would have been a better way to go...or not excluding the rest of us.

OR figuring out that if we shipped them with retainers we probably thought that was a good thing.

BP:

"If we shipped them that way we probably thought that was a good thing" should be added to your sig. And put on a T-shirt.

It's the perfect answer for all those pesky "Gee, that's nice, but why isn't it like THIS?" knucklehead queries.

Like a lot of knuckleheads it took me a while to realize that things are the way they are for a reason, speculation is useless (even annoying) and I should just shut up and go play my bass.

Back to learning some more Earth Wind & Fire tunes.....

i would substitue that activity with practicing my bass and wait to have the money to buy such a nice bass. String retainer or not, it is a beautiful bass.

but hey, that's just me.

Thanks to BP and crew, I have noticed that after my original post no.1 the pictures on the official MusicMan website have been updated with the current ones showing the string retainer in place. (Sorry to have caused you the trouble to arrange for the picture change)

Dear Mr. Sterling Ball, I can confirm to you that today I have had a chat with Pete at Strings and Things, I am waiting for a UK price quotation, and we are in negotiation regarding my possible ordering of one of these 5 Strings 25th Anniversary bass. Maple board, HSS Neodymium pickups, I hope that last bit about the pickup magnets is right, at least it says so on the website:

Pickups:
Standard - Single Humbucking with ceramic magnets; Optional - Dual Humbucking with ceramic magnets; Optional - Humbucking/Single coil/Single coil with ceramic magnets (Humbucker) and Neodymium magnets (Single coils)

Anyway I am giving it a lot of serious consideration and considering my savings possibilities but I will confirm here as soon as I have made my mind up. We will of course use the same agent store where I got the Bongo from, as they are a great outlet. (Chandler Guitars Ltd.)

Thanks for all your help in making these excellent instruments.

The H on the HSS is ceramic...in case you were thinking it was Neodymium as well as the Ss.

Thanks mynan, hopefully there will be one for me to try at the UK Bash so that will give me an opportunity to see if it appeals to me.

Finger crossed. :)

Nothing wrong with asking but to exclude others on a public forum is not good form. Hence Rex asking if an email would have been better since you didn't want others involved.

Good luck on your next EBMM. I hope it is everything you dream it to be.
