OK guys, I admit that in fact good construction of wood and quality pickup is all you really need for a good bass tone, but try to look at this matter from my perspective!
I play mostly private party gigs and during the gig I have set list with all kind of music genres! That's mine basic problem, to fit my tone for each song, for each genre in a few seconds, just between two songs, sometimes in the mix played songs even during the play!

That's why I use multi pickup bass with multi band EQ!

Otherwise, good old single H SR4 could be enough for me, personally! ;)

I got news for you, no one in the crowd appreciates any of your efforts to choose the right tone for the right song.
more than that - some aren't even aware what instrument is responsible for their unexplained urge to shake their booties when the band plays, some can't even hear it (!!!) they feel it but they could never tell it apart from those "other" band sounds which are not the vocals or the guitar

that aside, I prefer a plug and play bass with one tone I really like that works for me in any genre - thats why I play single pickup basses with the least amount of knobs.
nothing wrong with either attitude as long as you're having fun.
