35" has more sustain than a 34". The Bongo is 35".

Interesting concept, but I don't think EBMM will bite. They're probably looking at expanding their market into new territories and not just attracting a few more people that were already on the fence about the StingRay. Of course, the two-pickup configs could have been thought of in the same way and I do believe those have been wildly popular.

Are those facts from Wikipedia? ;)

I think BP and Ken (S) and Roger (S) are all cooking up 35" scale basses at NAMM this week. NOT!

Interesting question

I'm just guessing through my hat, but a 35" bass was not a trendy deal 20 years ago, and there were no special interest magazines to make money selling ads and hyping the industry while journalists split hairs.

Reckon BP knows lots of serious real world bass players and had his chance with the BONGO, and decided for 24 frets with hot electronics on a 34"; I trust his track record and overall experience enough to make the right decision on scale and dimensions for real world reasons, including sound and music, as well as materials, processes and business.

Even through I sometimes reach (in private) for a note above the 22nd, I'm so in love with everything else about my SR5s the way they are on a day to day basis that I can't imagine needing a 35" scale; "If it ain't broke ..." as the saying goes.

I'm still waiting for the right gal to come along and buy me a new BONGO5.

Just curious, are you sure about this? I don't own a BONGO but my spec sheet says 34"; meanwhile, a very expensive line of US made basses offer 32, 34 and 35, but don't claim inferior sustain with shorter scales.

I also play a very high quality neckthru 4 string with darn near infinite sustain, and very exotic electronics; as much as I love her, she doesn't do SR5 tricks.

Some makers need extra scale length to get a decent low B. I dont put the SR5 in that group.
And many makers can't make a bass that I would play regardless of the scale!

Where would someone keep a 35 foot long Stingray?

Perhaps this is what you are looking for:

And, to answer the question--Because there doesn't need to be a 35 (assuming you meant inch) scale Stingray.

To paraphrase BP: 35" scale is for companies who can't figure out how to get a solid B string out of 34".

Because a 35" is really to enhance the focus of the B string, I see no reason to do it. The SR5 B string is the best or tied with the best I've had on any bass. My MTD had an incredible B string, but the 35 scale was murder to play for me, and the string tension on the rest of the strings made it less comfortable overall. Some people like the higher string tension, but I think what EB created with the 34 scale is perfect. Now, about the STRING SPACING....

i hope big poppa reacts on this one. :) i really love my stingray5 now. but the problem is i dont use medium gauge strings. im more of a lightgauge strings player. and a 35 inch scale would make better tension for my setup. and the outstanding low b of the stingray5 will even be better with a 35" scale

To Adapt is not to Compromise

Hi cliff78,

For what it's worth, last year I had an accident and broke two important fingers on my left hand pretty bad. After surgery, recovery took some time; I was most afraid I'd never play bass again but the doctors told me not to worry.

Once again, stock Slinkys on my SR5s feel excellent; I doubt I'll ever try heavier guages.

My most recent acquisition is an electro-acoustic 4str jumbo hollow body bass; a decent one with a good onboard preamp and a lovely neck.
The stock strings are much lighter guage than any other bass I've played and it's taken me a couple of months to get the feel of them but now I can switch forth and back between basses with different guages depending on the music without getting my fingers in a knot.

The biggest issue I've had adapting to the flattop is the jumbo hollow body, and now, even it feels comfortable.

I have a .119 low B on my Bongo, and it sounds/feels/plays great.

As for a 35" scale Stingray, all I have to say is hope in one hand, and poop in the other and see which one fills up first. ;)

Hmm, am I sure the Bongo is 35"? No.

My Bongo is definitely a longer scale than my StingRay, and I was assuming they were 35" and 34" respectively.

Can't verify this since I don't have an SR5 on hand to compare to but I didn't think MM did anything other than a 34" scale on their basses.

No, your Bongo is very much 34" scale. So is your Stingray. Your Bongo neck is longer and has two more frets, but the distance from your nut to bridge is still 34".

No ifs, ands, or buts.
