It's not a patent, it's a trademark.

I've loved the 4+2 headstock ever since I saw the Silhouette when it first came out. Truly innovative at that time and still today. I think EBMM used to tout that their guitars could fit in the overhead baggage compartment on commercial airlines, but I don't think that applies today.
 
Thanks Beej; I'm still surprised that something as simple as a tuner arrangement stood up to patent scrutiny, especially when the shape of the head is so Fender-esque.
Rick- the headstock design is trademarked, not patented. Trademarks are a completely different thing (requiring less scrutiny) ... it's a recognizable sign of the brand. There are lots of examples of companies trademarking things that make them stand out.
