Went to buy a Sterling 5 today; of course they didn't have the color I wanted, so I asked to order it. The salesman told me 5, as in five, months waiting time for order?!??!

I mean, come on, MusicMan are good basses, but we're not talking custom made by luthier here... Was he pulling my leg in order to sell me what he had in stock?

Furthermore, he told me that the price was not warrantied. Like, it could cost me $2000.00 or it could cost me $2500.00 if MusicMan raised their prices in between now and five months from now?

What color are you looking for?

What I want is a black cherry burst, Sterling 5 in HS configuration with a maple board and unpainted headstock.

They had the exact thing in stock, but it was honey or cherry burst. I'm thinking they're trying to bull**** me into buying this one instead.

I'd say no, he's not pulling your leg. Music Man doesn't build 'stock'. There aren't a load of finished instruments just sitting around the shop. When a dealer orders a bass, or a shipment of basses, Music Man builds them. But not until the order is placed.

In a general sense, six months has been the standard answer for wait time on an order. (It's sometimes shorter, but no one should count on that - that's my take, anyway.)

When your dealer calls in your order, there are orders ahead of yours.

But, in effect, we ARE talking custom built. To your specifications, the color you want, the electronics package you specify, within reason.

Make sense?

Furthermore, he told me that the price was not warrantied. Like, it could cost me $2000.00 or it could cost me $2500.00 if MusicMan raised their prices in between now and five months from now?

That's between you and the dealer.

BTW, this is just general information - I'm not a company employee or anything.

it is around a 5 month wait.

no, they aren't a custom luthier. Yes, they are in high demand.

you might want to check around to see if another dealer has the color you want already in stock.

Welcome Bullshark.

EBMM instruments are made to order. They don't have a warehouse full of basses/guitars in every color just waiting and hoping for someone to order them. The bass you order is made FOR you, WHEN you order it. Of course, that takes time and that's why your dealer gave you an aprox. wait of 5 months. Many times, it will be more like 3 or 4 months.

Lakland and Sadowsky ASSEMBLE their basses(They don't even make the stuff in house) but they'll quote you 6-8+ months AND charge you more.

Welcome Bullshark,

This is a great home for us "knuckleheads" and one where we all share a love for these instruments. You may find some great deals on used basses in the above threads, but to me, there's nothing like buying a brand new one. Hell, just look at how excited adouglas is with his new Bongo (damn Bongoloid ;)) We all can't get enough of his corny (ahem - creative) shots and expressive prose. And if you have a chance to order one from the factory, where they build it specifically for you, well, that's just about as cool as it gets. IMHO.

Welcome again, Bullshark.

If i'm honest that sort of wait time isn't that bad at all for an instrument made to your specs. A lot of the time a boutique luthier will have you waiting 8 months or so for a bass, and as mingusbass pointed out, a lot of people only end up waiting about 3 or 4 months.

5 months is not a bad wait. It's worth the wait to get what you want.

Black Cherryburst is really nice, as is Cherryburst.

You can also try contacting Long & McQuade in Ottawa and see what they have in stock if you really want something right now. It's not that far of a drive.

And there's also Centre Music Victor in St. Hyacinthe (450) 774-8578.

Hm, maybe cherry burst wouldn't look so bad after all.

Hey Bullshark,

Think 5 months is bad... checkout the Rick wait time! ;)
Do you like how the Cherryburst plays/sounds? I think it looks great... but color isn't super important to me. I like a translucent finish with maple neck.

You could also try online (The Perfect Bass is a great place)

BTW, Good call on your decision.

Hey Jim, nice to see you here. I'm slowly getting used to he idea of a Cherryburst color; not my first choice, but it's a lovely player, aggressive but clear tone, very nice feel to the neck, well balanced and I could get it now.

In any case, I can't do 5 months; falls in a very bad period for personal reasons. It's either from now to a month or two, or in a year(but I'll be in Australia then, and at the price they go for down under, it's extremely unlikely I'd get one).
