Just purchased a what I believe to be a 94 Stingray Fretless from the original owner.
Plays and sounds better than great, haven't put it down since I got it.

Couple of questions:

- Tried to verify the age by serial number and didn't find it on the neck plate, only an engraved pic of the "Music Men".
Could the number be elsewhere?
For what it's worth the original owner told me the neck had been replaced under warranty with a "VIP" neck whatever that is.
I will tell you it's stunning tiger maple with lined PF board.
Can't see how it would make a difference to serial number location, just mentioning it.

- The string muting material has deteriorated.
Any suggestions for generic or exotic replacements?

I've always been very pleased with my MM basses and guitars. I've experimented with some exotic stuff (at great expense) and always found my way back to Music Man, you just can't beat them for playability, stability and sound (and they look great).
Thanks Ernie Ball.

Thanks for the info.
I gotta get new glasses, I was looking at the bridge yesterday for some time during set up and didn't see the number.
Computer mouse material ... Can't get much more generic than that, like it.
