I know it was heresay, but I had a SD Basslines pu and pre fitted to my 96 Aniversary Stingray.

Anyway, three years later, it would appear the pre has gone down.

I still have my original pu and pre but don't know how it was wired.
It's the one piece board with intergrated pots.

Does anyone have a diagram, or know of a web page with one ?

I have gigs coming up, so any help would be gratefully recieved

>>>Why could the simple act of changing a battery kill the pre-amp ?

You may have shorted-circuited something....and perhaps zapping the IC at the same time? Or a wire may have come loose. From reading your post, it appears that it was the SD pre-amp that went?

Apparently the Pre-EB pre-amps were subject to IC damage if the guitar lead was shorted. That danger was remedied by Music Man and also Ernie Ball using a protection resistor in them. Maybe the SDs don't have a protection but one would expect them to have it.
