A guy from the JP forum was asking about his JPM and changing to 9s. He couldn't get the trem to bend sharp very much without taking out a spring. Here is the link to the post...

http://www.petrucciforum.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=394186#394186

What's the scoop on that? I mean, my mind isn't grasping how you can't get the trem totally leval with 9s ... or if it's leval with 9s why it wouldn't bend sharp since leval is leval whether there are strings or not. What am I missing in my understanding here and do I need to just start sending my guitars off to have them setup by pros?

I'm so cofuse ed. LOL

I have set up LOTS of JP's with 9's and had no trouble at all except it is more of a balancing act getting the trem level, but I have not had to take a spring out. I will check that link when I get home tonight and see if I can figure out what he is saying.

Mes,

First of all, that guy from the Petrucci forum is a banana. He always has trouble with his trem and is always asking for help. Half the time he argues with the guys trying to help him!! (I think OC can attest to this) You are right, when he switched to 9's the trem springs naturally pulled the trem closer to the body and now he has no room to pull the trem up. Changing gauges is alway a pain with a floating trem because you have to do the "trem tension balancing act."---- Tune to pitch, adjust the trem spring tension , tune to pitch adjust the trem spring tension, etc. He, obviously, cannot grasp the concept.
You're getting confused because you're expecting sense from a guy with no sense!

I got confused when he said someone from EB said they were designed for 10s. I've never heard of such a thing but I thought... well, maybe I missed that memo. lol.

this thread read my mind

Actually, I was thinking of posting a similar question here earlier today. (And no, I'm not on any other forums except this one.)

I have played 9's forever, and when I called EBMM before ordering my JP6, I asked about them being designed for 10's. I was told that they did not recommend using 9's on the Petrucci, as it was designed for 10's, and that it would feel like 9's anyway when it had 10's on it.

So, I've been trying to adjust since I got my JP6 in december, but I am having a little trouble bending in the higher frets.. I end up letting go of the string due to the unexpected tension. I would *love* to put some Super Slinky's on there... I didn't think it would work, due to the aforementioned conversation.

So, I'm thrilled to hear Jon say that it's possible, and I beg you, oh Jardinero, to share some wisdom as to how we can avoid pitfalls when using 9's on a Petrucci.
What should we expect to adjust, etc. etc.? I realize that the truss might need a turn, but what about trem claw, and so on? I've never messed with anything inside a trem cavity before on my own, although it looks easy enough.

Ernie knows I've had my fill with that kid. I've tried on countless occasions to assist him in setting up a trem guitar and he always starts in with the flaming. I mean I WASTE MY TIME GIVING GOOD ADVICE AND HE STRAIGHT DISSES ME AFTER I TRY TO HELP HIM. Young Buck needs a good whoopin' I reckon. He even took the time to flame my friend Pete D on the quote he gave him on a MD 7. Ridiculous....

If you go to the JP forum and search my posts, you'll see that like 90% of them are on the subject of setting up a floating trem because those kids never seem to get it and for whatever reason Paul refuses to put up a sticky FAQ on guitar setups and repair.....instead you get a freeforall with a-holes advising the use of a mallet to adjust neck curvature instead of the damned truss rod....Koogs can attest to this as well...You'd think a player of JP's caliber would want the place policed a bit better.... :(

I used to use hybrid slinkys on my JP's. I had no problem setting it up. I went back to regular slinkys because I thought/think they have a little more umph. I have JP's set up with beefy slinkys and not even slinkys for low tuning, no problem setting up with the fat sets, no problem what-so-ever.

Hey OC, I have one word for you that will ruin your day  ---CAMBA--- . Imagine if he infected this forum? He single-handedly has ruined the JP forum for me.

Ern,

That's who I was referring to about the mallet neck adjustment.

That was posted as a SERIOUS response to someone's question on how to remove backbow from a neck....his response literally verbatim was " take the neck off the guitar, lay it on a flat surface and pound it with a mallet until it's straight"

God that's so wrong....not to mention there were probably like 4 young kids that went and did it ruining their prized possession....

Ridiculous.

Late!

My friend Raymond(who is Deliverance on the jp forum) and I were talking the other day about how he couldn't figure this camba guy out. I've been selectivly reading that forum for a while since so many of the people are "woah... if it aint 32nd note alternate picking with hybrid picking every third measure into a sweep arpeggio, it SUCKS!!!"

I have a lot of respect for Paul, and with the number of posts that pop up on that place, I can't fault him for not policing every post in the place. Maybe a few of us just need to form a clean up team for when people post idiodic mallet on the back of neck posts can make sure we very loudly warn everyone to forever ignore said person's technical advise. Lol.

Not sure about this guy. He's been there for a long time, and I've not seen his other floating trem problems. I think he's ok, just with a block on understanding floating trems. Maybe I'll just read through the archives for a bit tonight and educate myself on some of the folks there....

...well, moreover, let's not talk about the bad people on the OTHER forums, and just take solace in regards to the GOOD people that we have here (except Raz) :p ;)

sequence of setup

This is primarily for Jon or Tommy but I'll listen to anyone... ;)

So, say I want to switch my Petrucci from 10's down to 9's. I change the strings and tune to pitch.. then what? What is the proper sequence for making the following adjustments..

set truss rod tension
level the tremolo
adjust intonation

I've noticed that about JP forum, it gets tiring after a while.

But l use 9's on my Lukes, but when l got my ebmmjp, l didn't really feel much difference, there was a difference, but not much for me to say that they where uncomfortable. SO l stuck with the 10's on my JP's, now l'm actually thinking of trying 10's on my Luke, to hear how they sound.

It just sounds like a punk kid who doesn't know what the hell he's doing, l'd just tell him to take his guitar to a tech to do it for him, cause it's obvious he doesn't know what the hell he is doing, and shouldn't be doing that kind of work, GOD, l hope he doesn't want to change his pickups, god knows what he'll do?!?!?!!?!?!?!

He has ignored all suggestions to take his guitar to a tech.

You've got to be kidding me right?????? Did someone actually do this to their neck on their guitar???????

Why don't these kids take their guitars to techs, that's what l do, if l have a problem l can't solve, if you can't fix it, you have no business trying, you'll do more damage than good. That's no shot at you OrangeChannel, just making a statement.

I remember that thread, and I don't think anyone actually DID take a mallet to their guitar neck.... It wasn't OC that posted to do that, it was another board member.

I would hope common sense would tell the person that blunt force trauma to a guitar neck is NOT the correct way to fix it.......

I didn't think OC would post something like that, or anyone from this forum, if they did they should get banned from this forum.

Hammer/mullet and guitar should not be in the same sentence.

Thanks for the enlightening info too, l look forward to more. hehe.
