First of all let me tell you how much I love playing my Turquoise Pearl BFR JPX6 w/ the Roasted Maple neck. When I saw it (actually one of two hanging in my local GC's) I knew I had to have it. Then I played it, and it was unbelievable.

I first had my eyes on one at one store, and I played it a few times. Once I had the money I went back, and oddly the guitar was tuned a little more than a half step sharp and the 1st string wouldn't sound on the 1st fret! The only way I thought that could have happened, was if the guitar was dropped forward on its headstock. So I nixed that one. Then I played the one at the Richardson store, and found it a dream to play, so I bought it.

No.1

I noodled around with it for a bit enjoying the piezo settings especially, and I took it to a tech to get it setup, and to figure out the exact settings on the vibrato. One thing I came across is that every day the guitar would be out of tune, mostly going a few cents sharp. I figured the issues might have been the vibrato.

When I got the guitar back it played great the first day, but the next day I tuned up and found it had gone about a quarter step sharp. It still was fairly playable, but I took it back to my tech immediately just to check. His only remark was "I can't believe the neck moved so much in one day." I asked him if it was our rampant East Texas humidity, and he said "maybe."

It still had the same problems going up and down in it's tuning, but generally not as drastic. I took it back once again to adjust string height and another to get the pickups modded, but by then he was too fed up having seen me 3 times in as many weeks and turned down the last job.:(

Could the tuning issue have to do with the fact that I am using 11's on a floating tremolo with only 3 springs in the back? Or is the issue that the Roasted Maple absorbs excessive moisture from the air and moves a bit? The neck has a nice smooth finish (wax based?) on it, so I imagine it's not too absorbent.

What makes me wonder about the springs/vibrato is that sometimes when I bend the strings about a whole step I hear a sound like the springs vibrating, resonating, or creaking. I'm planning to put Helix 11's on it (which are slightly heavier than normal 11's), and eventually move up to nylon-wrapped basses with treble 12's so if the problem is vibrato-spring related I'd like to know.

I love the feel of the neck more than any solid-body electric I've played, so I'm hoping it's not a neck problem. The neck feels very similar to a classical and totally different from the smaller neck on the normal Barolo JPX6, which I played at GC.

I also have had a weird problem when I run the guitar in stereo: The piezo channel makes a hissing or muffling sound if the cable coming out of the pickup channel moves at all. I've gotten around it by looping a rt. angled jack cable through my strap to forestall any movement, and it works for now.

The tech I'm currently talking to said this might be a warranty issue. I'm planning to heavily mod the pickups, route the body cavity (for Duncan's) and and put in pickup rings. I imagine any modifications will void the warranty, so I wanna get the "muffling sound" handled correctly first. Is this a warranty/customer service issue?

No.3
If I put in the pickup rings, will the neck pickup ring be too close to the truss rod adjuster on the base of the neck?

No.4
And lastly: What tool is used to adjust the truss rod? I don't think I got one of these with the guitar and BFR case, either that or my first tech forgot to return it.

Please call customer service. Without seeing the guitar, they can help you better than anyone here can. (see the link in my signature, below)

Re: questions 3 - Yes, I think that will cause a problem.

Question 4 - there is no tool. Use whatever whatever fits in the holes. A small screwdriver or Allen wrench works just fine.

DrKev obviously answered your question best, but I'd like to comment on your first two questions....

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think even other brand guitars don't work well with 3 springs and 11's or higher...I'd suggest adding a spring, maybe that will help?

The roasted necks were supposed to hold their tune BETTER, so I don't think moisture should be a HUGE issue, but I could be wrong.

If you are running bigger strings has the nut been cut at all? If not you could very well have a binding issue. Also why in the world do you want to add pickup rings? You could install Duncan's without rings.

Triple Shots

My plan is to eliminate the 5-way switch, and install a P-rail set with Triple Shot Mounting Rings and a 3-way blade switch.

The Triple Shot Rings allow you to switch between series, parallel, rail coil, and p-90 coil for the p-rails or any pickup. The result is a very versatile arrangement of tones. I came to love this arrangement in my USA Soloist, which was this guitar's predecessor as my primary axe. At first I loved the sound of the JPX-6, but when I started to split the channels, I realized how muddy and overdriven the Dimarzio pickups sound.

I suppose the top Triple Shot ring might be able to be "modified" i.e. cut so that it will fit better.

Also, I'm hoping that the addition of pu rings will cut back on the fuzzy background noises that arise when I play sustained chords on a cleaner setting. I read about another JP owner putting foam under the pickups to clean up some noise issues. Any thoughts?

Good point about having the nut recut for thicker strings.

In process . . .

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I've been talking to Billy from C/S; he has been very helpful thus far.

A binding nut seems to be issue as I tuned up last night and then pressed all six strings gently behind the nut at once with a flat index finger. Then I checked my tuning again and it had returned back to the haywire out-of-tune arrangement. Is this an adequate test?

I'm going to send it in to get the electronics checked, and the neck/nut/bridge adjusted for my heavier strings.

I've also found a pedal that makes my guitar sound great on all the pickup settings. My Metasonix KV-100 in buffered tube bypass mode . . . the last place I would have thought to check . . . Still it makes me wonder how it's gonna sound w/ the Duncans.:p

Solution for the Piezo Problem!

So . . . it finally dawned on me as I was selling off a good number of my pedals on ebay and deoxiting them to removed scratchiness from the pots and knobs . . . that I need to try deoxit on the jacks.

So I sprayed deoxit on both ends of a patch cable and inserted them in the jacks and then switched them.

Voila! The problem is solved.

I still have my binding issue . . . and I think I've decided that the neck fights me too much. I really liked it before and enjoy it for the leverage in blues bends; but, I also play a lot of extended bar chords which the X-J frets aren't good for. I don't have the room I need between the frets to nail some of the very colorful ones easily.

Seriously I played a Stratocaster the other day and felt like it was more suited to my style. It just sucked in comparison to the tone of this baby.

I would just refret with Stainless Steel medium frets, but along with the pickup mods I've been holding out on I would be spending a nearly grand to make this guitar work for me. I'm just too broke right now to take care of this "sugarbaby"

Careful putting new pups that arent dimarzio in a EBMM. A lot of vendors use squared off tabs on their pups-the cutouts in EBMM guitars are triangular.
