I have played my SUB through ampeg, 4 different fenders, washburn, line 6, crate,
roland, I think that is all. I find nothing wrong with the sound of a SR SUB; which in case some of you don't know, it is an active bass. Nothing passive about it.

I took what I read about crappy passive basses as those non EB basses that were being listened to used by another band played on the same amp. Also, thought it could be adjusted so that the SUB would sound ok. Am I cornfused or what?

I prefer to leave the red Smarties to be eaten last.... :p

seriously though, I did find that I was having to fight with my Mesa walkAbout to get a tone "I liked" with my SR5 hence the ejection of said amp from my care. So there is something to be said about bass/amp combinations that will suit players better for what they're looking for but the only sense I can make from the original question is that possibly the keyboard amp you used had no tweeter or it wasn't working and your Ampeg does have a tweeter and that's where the "Fret Buzz/Tic-Tacs down the stairwell" sound is coming from. If you have spent alot of time tweaking your neck and action and it's still "buzzing"... get some insight from some other players/teachers as to your technique (not a criticism or slam there just some insight)
because that could very well be the smoking gun...er, buzzing fret in this caper

Well i have my treble about 20% too but in my eye the treble can be the culprit. Ive tweeked and had the neck and action tweeked to the finest suitable ability i can play at. But like wot MM Scarborough said its the fret noise coming through the amp that pisses me off not fret buzz.

Lower the pickup. That is exactly what my Jazz does if they are too high. Took me awhile to figure it out.

Ah. Yet another mystery solved. This is nothing to do with frets, then. This is good, old-fashioned STRING NOISE.

Two solutions, then:

1. Turn the treble down. We are bassists. If we wanted 'zing', we'd buy cymbals.

2. Work on your technique.

If your problem has been diagnosed correctly, and I'm guessing at this point that it has, those are the only solutions.

Work hard and prosper, grasshopper.

The SUB is not a "crappy passive bass" I just set one up for Tony Levin...I doubt he would want a crappy passive bass.

So what color and type of SUB is Tony getting? If you can't say, that's cool. It's neat to be able to say I just got through setting up a bass for Tony Levin.

THANK YOU ! I think?
Sure glad Sterling was pickin' up the tab for this communications seminar (pls Sterling?) ...
(Initially, I blamed the SR5 Piezo, strings, frets, onboard electronics, tweeters, and SWR for unwanted plinketyskreeches (never before heard on my exJ5) until my dead kat kame back to life, skratched my arms to a pulpy mess, and whispered in my ear that I should have some respect for finely engineered instruments that would actually (re)produce every subtle, sonic fragment of every sloppy little mi**** (or unintentional hammeron) my fingers could muster / Rayan

Hey, he gave me props for good advice, so I give it a 9. I mean, the lyrics are hard to understand but it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

Yeahh, yer right ... parody ... it's a nasty habit of mine ...
I weaken to mimicking ambiguity ... I originally got the disease from reading too much 14th - 16th century English Literature (I'll spare everybody the ugly details) ... more recently though I tend to blame David Letterman ("It's A Joke") ...
but you gotta admit that fretbuzz thing was pretty weird too / Rayan
