A Little Help?? Please??

I wanted to ask for some tips on tuning and re-stringing a Floyd Rose set up. I recently purchased a couple of EBMM guitars (an EVH and Axis) both of which have the Floyd Rose. These happen to be my first guitars with this set up. I would very much appreciate any advice or tips.

Floyd rose? no problem....ill list some steps to help you out. once you do it a few times its easy stuff dude

if you are using the same gauge strings and staying in the same tunning then this is what you do. if you are changing gauges or want to put your guitar in a different tuinning (whole step down) then you make some alterations to these steps.


1) First thing i do is get a small peice of wood or somthing you can place under your bridge to keep it floating. the last thing you want to do is take all the strings off your ax and have the bridge sink. to raise it just ush down on the bar and stick your object in there.

2)your EVH and Axis should come with a small allen key. there are locks at the nut and on the bridge you need to loosen. I personaly take all the strings off at once. some people will argue its bad for the guitar. i have done thousands of string changes on countless number of different bridge's theres nothing harmful about takin all the strings off at once.

3) so now you should have your strings off with the locking nut lossend and the individual locks for each string down at the bridge unlocked. if these arnt unlocked you cant get your strings out of the bridge. they hold them there from coming out. these tiny locks are FRAGILE! i have seen people snap these things so be gentle there a pain in the ass to order again. clean the neck down with which ever cleaner you like using and your ready to go with new strings.

4) im pretty sure all strings have ball ends. im yet to see any that dont. use wire snippers and cut the balls off the end of the string( the string is in a state of shock it wont feel any pain i promise). then just slip the string into the corresponding slot on the bridge. make sure its in all the way and then tighten the lock and give it a tug to make sure its in place and isnt going anywhere. then just feed the string through the tunning peg like any other guitar. repeat this 5 more times and your good to go. tune it up and your all set

dont forget to take the wood out from under the bridge after its in tune. there shouldnt be any drop in the bridge if you are in standard tunning using a regular set of strings. (10-46)

I think Lefty has given good advice on this.

The only thing I disagree w/is that you dont need to take all of your strings off at once. Id change them one at a time making sure to bring each new string up to pitch before replacing the next. This way if you dont want to block the trem you dont have to.

Yeah true - but it takes longer AND makes it really difficult to clean the fingerboard well. I go with the take 'em all of routine.

Block the trem and take them all off, really quick and as mentioned you can inspect and clean the fretboard while you're at it. Do it a couple of times and you're on auto-pilot.

The point about blocking the trem to keep it floating is misleading as the Axis/EVH floyds do not float...they rest on the body.

On my axis I have a small piece of leather (swatch sample from a sofa store!) that I rest under the bridge to protect the top when I remove all the strings.

I have never had problems taking all strings off at once but there are several guys on here who have....
