Hey, u talkin to me? NY
We need a metal-head group hug...

Like I had said earlier, a HH (Big Poppa) AL with EMG 81 and 85 or 60 in the neck and a Floyd! I would buy one...;)

Jason - I think the pictures of the established metal shapes (inclusive of the Al body)are a great starting place.... in case anyone in the head office is following this thread and becomes inclined to actually entertain the idea brought up by Mr. Wells. :D

Well the band The Human Abstract are one of my fav metal bands and they are endorsed by EBMM and play JPs and BFR JPs. Look at all the charvels and Jacksons used for thrash and 80s metal. Just a strat style body with a pointy headstock and neon colors half the time. I think my Silo can metal it up just as good as a Flying V with EMGs can. Shoot, put enough gain behind an AL with the 3 MM90s and it can sound metal!

actually, no. try it, crank some single coils as much as you can. then nail a convincing metal tone. compare it to a good recording. it just doesn't happen. it turns to mush.

and about the neon colors: thrash rose as an answer to LA hair metal. no self respecting thrasher would be seen with a colored guitar.

Funny thread. :)

But how about trying to work out the character of a "Metal Guitar"? And how about thinking out of the box instead of playing with 50-odd years old Legos®?

How about balancing the guitar so it would handle well on extra long straps? How about finishing the whole thing including neck and neck pocket to make it sweat-proof? How about adding BP's research on body materials he carried out when developing the Bongo? How about a Bongo shaped guitar anyway (I know, I know *ducks for cover* ). How about standard nuts wide enough to allow fatter strings for massive down tuning?

And how about some sort of agreement on the sound? Everything's possible, from Uber-precise voicing, where every single string of any chord feels like a whip, to some bassy, pressing sound that sits on your chest like a sumo wrestler ...

Come to think of it, I doubt there can any such thing as "the" metal guitar. Tastes here are just as different as in any other genre of music, aren't they?

cheers
Dwells:D

Isn't the JP a guitar designed specifically for playing metal?

the stealth finish does just that. but i think people really dig EBMM for the unfinished necks. as far as sound goes, anythings good as long as it's coming from an EMG (or a blackout/livewire). the floyd rose nut acomodates any tuning. but i do agree, the strap buttons need some shifting.

Isn't the JP a guitar designed specifically for playing metal?

most people agree that it's made to play Dream Theater metal, not quite... Machine head / Slayer / Testament.

Wow. I see what Dean is saying. There isn't one guitar from EBMM specifically *made* for metal. The exception would be the JP guitars, but apparently they aren't metal enough for him (they're more than metal enough for me, but different strokes I guess). There are a bunch of guitars which are CAPABLE of metal, but not specifically MADE for metal. That really isn't a fair statement, but I understand where Dean is coming from.

It would be nice to have something from the factory that doesn't need a pickup swap or modification to be "metal."

If EBMM were to make one, I'd like to see these features:

Ebony Fretboard
High-Output pickups like EMG 81, DiMarzio D-Activator/X2N
Mahogany or Alder body
Set neck or neck-thru
Option of hard-tail or floyd/floating trem

+1, and you get the "common sense award" of today! :D

we could add 24 frets and thin neck to the list.

edit: y'know ebmm doesn't really do set necks, right?

Well Dante I didnt say an MM90 would sound good, just through an insane amount of gain everything starts to sound the same. Sure EMGs or a Crunchlab or something high ouput will sound better. Just like an EMG 81 wouldnt be good for country.

Thrash was around before 80s hair metal came out it just didnt get popular for a long time. Your right no thrasher would be caught with a neon guitar but Cici Deville would!! Haha I dont even consider air metal real metal but hey whatever to each his own.

I'm going to be a stereotypical elitist and say one aspect of the guitar should not be the cornerstone or monumental piece in obtaining what we so arbitrarily call "a metal sound."

The Player --> Guitars --> Amp --> Color

It is not only the individual quality of each four, but how they are utilized in unison and harmonized together when played.

i disagree, if it doesnt sound good, then it doesn't sound the same. hence the need for specific guitars.

Guitars always have a "metal sound!" the strings are metal, the bridge is metal, the cable is metal (wrapped in plastic), the whole dang signal path is MADE of metal :D

I have a feeling the BP is laughing at this thread (I am too). Is there something specific that constitutes a "metal" guitar? PRS for example to me doesnt seem to be a Metal guitar but quite a bit of metal guys play them. And whats the big deal with swaping pups anyway? Make it your OWN metal guitar....Dont even respond to my comment...this is pointless. I'm gonna go play some Metal on my Silo Special with Piezo :D muahahaha.

When you've all decided, please could you let me know what the definition of a 'Metal' guitar is....

For the record, I've got a Kramer 450G, soon to be heading to the bay. It's not a metal guitar (well, I'm not actually sure about that) but it has got an aluminium neck if that counts....?
