I have the opportunity of trading my Stingray 5 H for a Bongo 5 HS... Now really I want to know what the differences will be tonally if I make the trade, and what your opinions are on it...

Thanks people! :D

I've not tried a bongo but i know that's a good deal.

personally i'd go for it, i prefer the look of bongo 5s, apparently they play and sound much nicer. That's just me though.

Do you have an opportunity to test it out in a band situation before you make the trade? That would be the best bet before making a final decision.

I personally prefer the look and feel of an SR5. I have yet to plug a Bongo in although I've tried a couple acoustically.

I've used my Ray a couple of times now, and it really doesn't seem to cut through my guitarist's exclusive acoustic guitars' rich tones so well, I can see how it's perfect in an electric setting, but I feel I need something with much more definition to compete.

I run it through a Mark Bass CMD 121H, by the way - I don't think the horn suits the Ray sound too well in honesty.

Plus it's just as much of a looker too...

I think I'll do it; may as well try it out, they seem to be so highly regarded in terms of clarity. And it wouldn't be too much of a departure (same company an' all!)

Ideally I'd have both of course... Nice (sort of) matching pair!

I had a Bongo HS JUST LIKE THAT!

Good basses. The one I had was a monster player.

What colour is it.. it looks like it has a little dark bust effect round the edges of a carbon blue pearl (the same), which really compliments the bongo in my opinion, I was very wary about the swap til I saw that pic! I'd say I've been pretty lucky with colours considering the first ones I've seen I've loved so much just to look at! What's the pickguard called, is it even an EBMM original?

Ooops. My Bongo 5 HS was Blue Pearl, not CBP.

My bad.

In any case, I really liked my 5 HS and gigged it a LOT with the old band.

I also had a 4 HS which really was in CBP.

The 5 HS was this one:

Silverburst got that one from me when I decided I needed another single H Bongo. He may still have it, although he's notoriously slutty. (Which I admire about him.)

That's the CBP four banger. I wish I could remember what happened to that one.

(I have also been notoriously slutty, but that's all in the past now. Ahem.)

I think it's really hard to describe tonal differences without actually getting your ears involved, but I think the Bongo has a bit less....oh, I hate the word "growl"...so let's say the Bongo has a ROUNDER tone. Plus, that single coil at the neck is just a great option. I found it ideal for adding some meat when playing blues or slow ballads.

Good luck! It's hard to go wrong, so you got that going for you.

me too! tonally (if thats a word) the single coil and the 18 watt pre amp seems to open up the sound more. its hard to describe it.......the frequency's seem wider? fuller? the only problem i have with the bongos is (that when i use to play) the bass was way to hot for most amps. yeah, yeah, i know pull back the gain. the problem is when you pull the gain/volume back...i felt (only my opinion) that i lost some of the sonic beauty (or booty) of the bass and i had to be aware of how hard i was playing. live i feel stingray rays and sterlings are superior (there not as hot, they have a consistent sound and they cut through the club) but, recording wise the bongo rules my studio.
thats my story and i'm sticking to it!
