a question about "rare" colors/models:

Hey all,
I have a trans green stingray, and was wondering if anybody knows how rare these are. I know they were only produced for a couple of years, but other than that, I have no idea how rare or common these are. Along these lines, is there any kind of resource or guide that could shed some light on the value of the less common MM basses, like my dream bass, the 20th Anniversary?

Anyway, since picking up a fretless stingray, the trans green (fretted) has been "collecting dust". Is this color, or any other "rare" color worth holding on to for appreciation, or is it just another color?

Did you get that bright green SR with black pickguard and maple neck that was on eBay just a while ago? Can you post pics? It was an interesting looking SR.

There are some colors that have been discontinued and would be, in my opinion, worth holding onto. I know most of the sparkle finishes have been stopped, an example being Sparkle Blue, which is my favorite.

You can also go to the MM website and check out the colors available in the Build Your Instrument section. It notes some colors that have been stopped, but not all. If you did get that green thang that was on eBay a short while ago, I'd keep it! It's got an alien look to it - very devious from the common "feel" of a MM SR!

In my opinion, no... these probably won't become valuable because of "rarity". There isn't a big enough market for Musicman basses (correct me if I'm wrong).

IMO rarity value for colours is an invention of ebay sellers.

I keep seeing "Rare Blue Dawn" crap on eBay, the bass priced at over normal "new" selling price and I think whoever said this is an eBay seller invention is exactly right.

the dude from the place that i got it from went to America and brought it back with him. so not sure exactly where it came from. it is 2000, blue sparkle/maple fretboard/3eq/piezo, if that helps at all

Jub, you might have to order it (Bass Central would be my suggestion) and I don't know how long it would take to get it...or there might be one in stock somewhere, but if you look here:

...it says desert gold is available on the Stingray (and all other models). Great color!

Hey Rhys! Did you check out Rod Trussbroken's website? It has pictures of many beautiful MM bass guitars! Check near the bottom, under a name called "Phil." There's a blue sparkle SR that matches your description. Maybe the person who sold it to you got it from "Phil"!

By the way: Lucky bastard! I'm waiting for some lovely SR to pop up on eBay. Then I'm gonna nab that sucka!

anyways, it is bizzare, maybe mine isn't actually blue sparkle, because although having a sparkle finish, it is deffentley not as 'sparkle' as the ones ive seen in the pictures.

Do other colours have sparkle in them, whilst not being called a sparkle finish?

Yeah. I think blue dawn, autumn red, and a slew of other pretty & officially non-"sparkle" do have a little glitter to them.

Note that some of the pics of the sparkle SR's (if not all) on Rod's website are taken with the camera's flash on. This will certainly give sparkle finishes more sparkle to them. So don't be immediately turned off by the lack of sparkle of your bass compared to the pics on Rod's website, since those are brilliantly exaggerated with flash.

When I had a blue sparkle MM SR (now owned by xcentralx), I really couldn't see the sparkle until I either looked closely at the bass or had the bass in good and bright lighting. I didn't care for taking flash pictures of the bass because, in my opinion, flash ruins the beauty and grace of the bass. Of course, the more sparkle you can show on a SR, the more "oooo"'s you get.

I don't think, however, that the more plain finishes (ie. carbon blue and such) have sparkle. So if your bass does have that special sparkle to it, it probably is a sparkle finish or at least one of the more fancier finishes that aren't officially labeled as sparkle.

Can you post a picture of your bass? I love sparkly SR's - they make my day.

Here's a pic of the blue sparkle that I had in good sunlight. It certainly shows that lovely sparkle!
