i feel like chattin a bit so heres my take:p
I will always suggest a Valve/Tube amp if $$$ 's allow .....Fender has some great ones as does Traynor/Yorkville sound and Peavey that fall into that $500.00 -$600.00 out the door Tube amp.......Solid state amps IMHO are very sterile:( so what if your never gonna leave the house ...does that mean sacrifice TONE and RESPONSE from your guitar?.......Foggy you got a Cadillac for a Guitar don't give it a Lada for an amp:D:D if you want some decent headroom get something 30- 50 watts Valve with a wicked clean channel, you can always grab a True bypass higain pedal and with a tube amp the pedal will actually work.....because it CAN drive the input of the amp ....cant do that with solid state and your going to have a nice warm tube overdrive tone as well ...and as always Take your guitar with you while trying the amps out!:D
And as always ..you/I Live in Canada and I will do whatever i can to give you great price or point you to someone that will!

My Mesa Mark III Coliseum is around 150-180 watts, Mesa never officially rated it, because there were so few ever made (about 70-80 amps). The most I can crank it to is about 2 on the Master, before it starts shaking things badly in the house. It sounds deadly at any volume, so whether it's quiet like a whisper, or roaring, still sounds awesome!

Cornford Carrerra - 5 watts of bliss

master 3/4 to full. Gain 1/4 to 3/4.

It's pretty loud but mangable and you can easily get power stage and pre stage overdrive happening.

Laney LC/LH 50, typically preamp about 1/2 up, amp between 3-4. But I attenuate from the guitar quite a bit. I live alone, and with the exception of a couple neighbors out back, only the coyotes could hear it. Sometimes we jam.

My ears never ring afterward. If they do, it's too loud. If I can't feel it in my body, it's too soft. That's why tiny amps don't get me off. Some can get loud, but I can't feel 'em.

Some powerful amps can wind up pretty good at lower volumes, some can't. My son's DSL100 doesn't even approach tone in his house, and he and his posse can get loud.

Well foggy, I tend to use mt Korg Pandora, with my wireless headphones, so I sometimes crank that up. If I'm using the Trademark 10, it's when the kids are sleeping, so I'm lucky to see 2. Great amps and you can get them for like $150 on the bay.

I've got a Behringer 60W combo amp and I rarely turn it past 2. Even at 2 and with the Bongo, it can pump out pretty loud volumes.

Shame on myself. Spent so much on guitars yet circumstances forbid me to own even a decent 15w tube amp (the likes of LC15, blues junior...)

Using humble amp like the ibanez valbee 5 watt, and sometimes a 15w peavey solidstate. But happy to be able to crank all the way up with both these.. :D

That was why I started this thread. Most amps on average are 100 watts!
I just don't think there are that many people gigging compared to people playing at home.

When I am at home and there are other people in the house, I usually run my Z amps around 10:00 on the dial (no numbers on the control, so it's a clock dial reference I'm using). with either my Super Sport or 20th Silo running at 8 on the volume, it's a nice sound and not 'too' loud.:);)

when I'm able to crank it, I'll push the volume just a shade past half-way on the amp, open up the guitar volume and use a J-Drive:D:D:D

if I were giggin with either of my amps, I'd still be inclined to run volume just a shade under half-way, maybe a couple of pedals (RC and AC Boost from Xotic and maybe my ol' Boss Chorus and Flange boxes) and have a couple of well placed mics:cool:;)

play-on, eh!

I have my Line 6 POS Spider II in my room, and around 8:30, it's plenty loud enough. Tone sucks on pretty much any distortion channel, but, eh, it's solid state, so whatd'ya do...

My Mesa, on the other hand, is in the basement. I play with earplugs with the volume at around 9 o'clock. Sounds Godly

I've yet to get complaints from the neighbours, but last summer, they played REALLY loud country music on their stereo and I'm just itching to get them back...Oh wait, they moved out...Damn...

'Cause we all know, Mesa Boogie 100 Watts > some lame plastic stereo. :D

I rarely play amplified at home. The neighbors are too close.

Sometimes I'll have a flute or sax player come over. Then I'll plug in and play just a tad softer than them.

I remember reading a suggestion from Steve Morse to play unamplified when you practice as one way to improve your playing. I think it works...and it makes it so you REALLY look forward to plugging in.
