Seems like most all us CANT really crank up the volume, therefore the question - why buy loud amps at the first place?? Someone please enlighten me please..

It wasn't about the volume at all. It was strictly the tone that sold me on the Stiletto. The fact that it has a master volume and I also have a hotplate means that I can get the "tone" I was hearing in my head at a volume everyone in the house can tolerate. If and when I ever do play out, then I'll have that covered too.

I've spent a lot of time and of money over the past few years buying and then selling other tube amps, solid state amps, modelers, 1/4 watt tube amps, you name it, that it was comical.

This is what I was looking for. I may not be using it to it's full potential but it makes me happy when I plug in and turn it on, it inspires me to play.

Tone for me as well. I hunted for my amp, it's tough finding 1 of 70~ especially when they are 20 years old. The best part is like i mentioned, it sounds killer at low volumes too. I can't stand to play a modeler, they just don't have the feel of a tube amp, even at TV volume.

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of those 1/4 watt smokey amps for the house.

I love my smokey for practicing scales, stretches, etc. I use it everyday. It's great because I can walk around, too. With a 2' cord, I just put it the smokey in my pocket. And, it's portable. You can use it in a hotel room, no problem.

But for actual practice, I gotta use the main amp. I just wait until everyone's out of the house and crank it up as loud as the house can handle. (Mesa Lonestar, 50W setting, solo enabled at about 2 o'clock, master somewhere between noon and 2 o'clock, and output at about 9 o'clock.)

Not that loud, really, but it fills the house and rattle the living room windows.:D

I just ordered a Frenzel Twin Plexi Rock Machine can't wait to get it. It is all point to point hand wired got it in the low powered 25 watt version. It has two preamps one based off Fender Blackface and one off the Marshall plexi. I can't wait:D One month backorder though its just like EBMM guitars its worth the wait.

Here is the link if anyone is interested

Never had a PTP Hand wired amp I'm pretty excited to see what all the hype is about. Plus the guy that runs the site (Jim Frenzel) is super friendly and helpful. His prices are extremely extremely reasonable for what he is offering too.

Did you look at his wiring page? All I can say is  crazy. It looks like a science project.

I didn't buy a loud amp. I bought an amp that sounds good! It just happens to be loud, but there's little or nothing I can do about that.

But putting that aside, I think that most--perhaps all?--amps are, by their very nature, loud. After all, what is the definition of amplification, eh? Anything with a 12" speaker is going to be loud; it doesn't matter if there are 30 watts or 100 watts driving it. The amps that are substantially more quiet have 8" or smaller speakers, and they just don't sound that great.

So I think it's not that we choose loud amps; it's just that the amps we like happen to be loud. It's the nature of the beast.

In the past, I think I had some little Zoom muti-effects pedal that I just plugged straight into. No amp, just the guitar and a set of headphones.

I did get a Roland Micro Cube that handles low volumes very well. I still use it occasionally, but since I've set up my pedalboard and switched to all-tube . . . .

It's all about need's of tone,my favourite clean sounding amp is a very early 70's silverface vibrolux reverb(blackface amp,was lucky to have one of the early ones),miles of headroom and it would blow my house up if it was maxed,I tried a cornford harlequin but I found it didn't have enough of the in-between sounds I needed for my dirt amp that I bought its bigger brother( 14 watts aparently not the 18 I thought it was) and it does the best hot overdrive I have heard.

Larry, that looks like an awesome company and one that I saved to my favorites as a possible purchase. I'd love to hear the tones and reviews once you get it to help me decide. I was also looking at the Mesa/Boogie Mark IV (expensive), H&K Switchblade, and Engl Screamer.
