I see an overwhelming number of Amber and Gold Axis guitars which made me think. (Don't worry, no one was hurt).

Q: Is it easier to stain a guitar with some colors more than another colors? In other words, does wood take to some colors better than others, like it easier to stain wood gold than say...purple? OR, is it simply a matter of the colors that sell more, so you make more of that color. I see 50 amber Axis guitars for every purple, so it made me wonder.

Thanks

Rad,

I'm going to throw up a guess, although I'm sure some stains do take to wood better than others - i'm pretty sure it is just simply a color choice decision by managment.

Interesting question.

But I do know some of the BFR Jp's after a certain while got the HS painted flat black because the consistently staining the mahog HS with the maple cap became problematic. Different woods stain differently, not sure about the same wood staining differently with different colors.

Maybe it's just what gets ordered the most? I would have never guessed that JP Red Pearl Burst was the most Popular Colour Ordered.

All guitars are made to order. So, to some extent, we.....and the music store who buy on spec.....are determining what colors are being made. If a color is available for a long time and almost nobody orders that color, it would make sense to discontinue it.

I would definitely say it goes by what sells the most, as BP says that is why there are not many shades of green made as green does not move well. I have to say as far back as the EVH,s in which there is a documentation of how many were made in each color with supposedly T-Gold, Blue, Purple and Red at around 1,400 in each. Yet on ebay you will see 3 T-Gold to 1 up for sale compared to the other three colors which has me believing that there had to be more made in that color.

That is exactly what got me thinkin'. Definitely more in that color, but is simply because they sell more?
