A question for you mechanical engineering type of person

I intend making a new knob (out of metal) for the end of my tremelo arm on my LEAL and I have been informed that the thread is 10-32 UNF.

I have come across a set of taps and they are quoted as containing a 10-32 NF thread.

So my question is - is 10-32 UNF the same as 10-32 NF?

UNF and NF are the same: fine thread. Watch out for UNEF, which is extra fine. Have a nice day!

Got a set of 6 assorted taps, a tap wrench and titanium coated drills for £4.50 (circa $9.00).
... and yes the 10-32 NF tap is just fine. Thanks guys.

I just dont understand why it's called 10-32 and not 5-16!!

It's a shame cos I have my late Dad's tools from when he was an Air mechanic/Electrician on a WW2 Aircraft carrier and all his jig & tool making stuff, but 10-32 UNF was not part of his kit!! BSP/whitworth/BA no probs but no UNF.
Oh well I got one now.

I understand that 10-32 UNF is a thread used on guitar truss rods too! - now did ya know that?

Spud, a 10-32 indicates that the size of the basic major diameter is .190 inches and there are 32 threads per inch length.

American screw thread gauges

A 5-16 would indicate a .125 basic major diameter with a length of 16 threads per inch length.

NF is older terminology and was replaced with UNF the "F" indicates a Fine pitch of the thread.

As far as the thread on the truss rod, nope I didn't know that, but it doesn't suprise me at all. I tend to use a lot of 10-32's in mechanical design daily.

For those that don't know, it all started happening after I took delivery of the LEAL.
A guy in my mates guitar workshop really liked the look of the LEAL and said he could make me a solid Gold knob for the Trem and also a pickup selector knob.

I laughed, but he said if I could come up with some scrap Gold he would cast the knobs and I would have to cut the thread on the trem knob and the slot in the P/u selector. We are also looking to do solid silver knobs for the BCB.

It was kinda funny when I went to his goldsmith shop with my scrap "gold". The first thing he did was take a magnet to the pile and rejected the stuff that "stuck" Ha!

I had about 19 grams (see pic) and he recons I may need about another 11-12 grams.

He re opens the shop next week after being on holiday and we'll take it from there he's always got some scrap gold hanging about!!
I'll be sure to post pics if we can pull it off!!

I took close on 40 grams(almost 1.5 ounces= approx £160 scrap value) of Gold today to my "Goldsmith" mate along with spare trem and pickup selector (plastic) knobs.

The gold is going to be melted down next week and cast into solid gold "knobs" for my LEAL.

Hope it all works out !!!

Ha! Yeah I do - I train people on how to get blood out of a stone!!

- It was amazing really - I just put the word about that I was after scrap gold and a lot of my work colleagues brought in bits and pieces.
- one had separated from her husband and gave me her wedding ring. She was only going to throw it away!! - someone else gave me a signet ring, I had an old gold chain and it's amazing how much it added up.

I still may not have quite enough though - we''ll see.
