Sad to hear, but life goes on, as always!

Since Toto is history, maybe Simon Philipps has some time to spear ;)

Anyhoo, it will be exciting to see what DT will be like in the future!

my 2 cents worth: I actually think DT has out grown Portnoy!
musically the drumming hasnt really changed for years but musically JP JR JM have pushed them selves as musicians and they all still practice like mad!
so hopefully they get someone who at the top of there game i.e Virgil Donati etc i still love MP but musically hes drumming hasnt evolved from AWAKE:)

Exactly what I thought, though Portnoy was a big influence besides his musical input. I hope Donati, that guy is sick and up to the challenge.

Jeez.....VH used to be my fave band - and they imploded.....since 2003 it's been Dream Theater...and this....damn! LOL

After some careful thought - I think this may be a good thing.....

a) I think James will be less dictated to now and be able to create a bit more. The lyrics and vocals on his solo albums are superb.

b) They had always been varied in music styles, but less so recently - was this down to MP.....don't know.....only time will tell.

I don't think it's a sad day at all.......very surprising, especially as the only one that made Mike do all these other projects to make him feel burned out was Mike himself.........

Knee jerk reaction maybe? Who knows....just glad I've been able to see them twice over the last couple of years...

All being said though - from a drumming perspective, a very tough act to follow, not just with his ability - but with his stage presence etc...

It just goes to show no one man is irreplaceable in agroup and the band wont stop because he decides to drop out.
Look at metallica with their 3rd bass player in 30plus yrs still going strong.

I'm just glad to hear BP say its all high road. From MP's release where he mentioned his father naming the band, it seemed like he maybe didn't wait ling enough before issuing that press release. IT had a little bite to it. DT's press realease seemed a little more level headed.

Sometimes when this happens you end up with more good music. I look at Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and all the good satuff that came out of that. Without Ozzy and Dio leaving Sabbath there's no Blizzard of Ozzy and no Holy Diver etc.

I'm sitting here right now listening to Octavarium, and I have absolutely no idea what to think. I honestly don't think they could ever replace Mike, it just wouldn't be DT without him, he's been at the heart of things for so long now. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Mike ended up wanting to return soon, like he said, the band has been basically his whole life for the last 20 years, leaving after that long, it might be hard to go on without it, being such a huge part of his life. But I guess he wouldn't have left if he wasn't sure it was what he wanted.

Although, I do hope that this means that maybe John Myung will start writing lyrics again, most of my favourite DT songs (and some of the best and most underrated IMO) are the ones with his lyrics.

There is no shortage of drummers who could fill MP's shoes as far as musicianship goes. However, Portnoy's impact on the commercial side of the band, fan relations and musical direction is undisputedly massive.
Personally, I hope and believe that this will be a breath of fresh air to both Mike Portnoy and DT and I will continue to support DT and Portnoy regardless.

Cheers

Here's the thing; I don't think I ever seen Petrucci playing anything without Portnoy on drums, even G3 tour and LTE had MP on the skins (except for when JP sat in with his wife's band).
It'll be interesting to see him playing with another drummer.

Hmm, maybe this will mean a return to Myung providing lyrics?

I will greatly miss him in the DT line up. I honestly can not think of a good replacement. No one could provide that same touch that MP provided. I wish him luck though, and look forward to his next project.

Donati would be a great new member. I remember watching him on Steve Vai's live and the Astoria and being amazed.

When it's time, it's time. It's even more difficult when you've spent the better part of your lives together as best friends. Hopefully everyone involved stays positive about the split. It will be interesting to see where both DT and MP go in the future.

I attended a Virgil Donati clinic several years ago, here in Italy. I've been dragged there by my drummer and wasn't convinced I was about to spend a good evening at first.
After 10 minutes I was already hooked. Donati is an unbelievable drummer, plus he has italian origins :)

weird feeling

Folks,

I've been thinking about this since I first read this post last night. I'm 40 years old and have followed DT since they began touring hard and heavy to promote Images and Words back in 1992 when they fist broke into the radio market. I was lucky enough to catch a club show in Milwaukee back in the fall of 1992.

It makes me feel a sense of loss. The divorce analogy is a good one. I feel kind of like I did a few years ago when some friends unexpectedly announced they were splitting. In the same way as I did with them, I wish everyone in DT the best.

But the big difference is I *knew* my friends. Though I feel a certain bond with DT, it's of my making. My listening to their music, learning what I can on my JP guitar, going to their shows and watching their DVDs, reading their biography. They supported that bond by doing their job extremely well. but I don't know any of them.

I cannot help but think that whatever led to this outcome must be much more than any one member can or would want to articulate to the public, as much as we have supported the band over the years.

I really wonder what DT will be like in the future. Best to everyone involved.
