I didn't get to play it amplified the first few days, as I was away from home. Initial thoughts were WOW! A really beautiful looking bass. The case is good too. More practical than the case which came with the 30th SR4(I bought a musicman hard case for it, and have the lovely burgundy leather one stashed somewhere safe).
I've not had band practice this week so have only played it in my music room. It's a light bass, very comfortable to wear. The neck is lovely. I have unfinished necks on my 20th SR4 and fretless SR4, but this is the first unsullied virgin one I've played. The craftsmanship on this instrument is really something. Typical EBMM quality but taken to the next level. Absolutely flawless.
Plugged into my Markbass rig at a reasonable volume the first thing that struck me was the deep low end resonance. Clear but deep. I guess that's the mahogany toneblock at work(just a guess, I'm no expert in these matters). The contol knobs work beautifully, have that lovely resistance when you turn them. Once set they ain't going nowhere. As you would expect there are a great range of useable tones.
The pickup selector switch feels nice and sturdy with a positive action. Again, all the positions offer very useable sounds. My favourites so far are position 2(coil 1) and position 4(coils 2 and 3). Position 2 gives a nice growly modern type sound. Nice and heavy on the bottom end, but with plenty of mids to cut through. Position 4 gives more of an old school vibe without being muddy. I've just learnt to play Deja Vu by Beyonce and it sounds great in position 4, treble cut a bit with a bit of bass and middle boost. Really gritty and bassy sounding.
So, all in all a great bass. I haven't touched my Bongos this week, but no doubt I'll go back to them. This bass will definitely get lots of play, though, as it is so versatile.
Hope you liked my little report, anyone thinking of getting one of these should go for it.
