So since I have GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) pretty bad, I have been keeping my eye out for specific EBMM's. I found an axis sport that I really want. It was described as mint condition. I sent the $$$. Then this morning I got this email.



"I was getting the guitar prepared for shipping
i had put some wide scotch tape on the guitar
to keep it from getting scratched while playing
under the string and down the body
took the tape off tonight to clean the guitar up for you
a bunch of adhesive stayed on the guitar
i couldn't get the stuff off
tried some mild finger nail polish remover, recommended
by the wife. It ended up damaging the finish on the guitar
it smeared the lacquer all over
looks like s**t
i'm taking the guitar to the local ernieball dealer to see what can be done
sorry...........

So, to repair this guitar I am thinking the clear coat will have to be removed and re applied. (at least)
I am sure I can get the $$ back without issue. The question here is… can the guitar be sent back to SLO to be stripped and re-coated? Also, the $64 question, How much would this cost?

For the record, if this guy had just used lighter fluid (make sure the key ingredient is naptha) that adhesive would have wiped off in seconds and it wouldn't have phased the guitar finish.

Unbelievable.

Sounds like this guy gets the Darwin award for guitar maintenance...

I was going to offer the suggestion of lighter fluid, but I thought that that would have given the same effect. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I know what to do (and NOT to do) in the future, should the need ever arise.

Of course, I never have any intention of getting tape or sticker happy with my guitars, but you never know with kooks like me.

When I applied Birchwood Casey gun stock oil on my neck, a little bit got on the finish of the guitar. I used a little acetone and it came right off.

I called and talked to someone at EB before I did that though, to make sure it wasn't going to damage the finish.

there's a chance it can be buffed out. depends on how deep the poly finish is burned. there's a chance its not very deep.

I am not getting that guitar. The seller does not want to pay to have Ernie refinish the ax. That is the only way I would have been happy. Oh well, I guess I just have to keep shopping for a guitar. Thanks for letting me share and for your advice. I'll have more on this later including a picture of what use to be the ax itself.

yeah no kidding, i would have went for goo-gone. that ****s really safe on stuff. ofcourse i never would have put tape on the guitar to begin with. and if you have to use masking tape it doesn't leave residue.
