Well lot of good feedback here guys, which is what I was hoping for. Guess I gotta go think it all over again, lol!

Prevailing opinion seems to be to get a Solid State amp then, not a tube, with built in stuff I guess? As far as that goes, I am always afraid with that that I will be stuck with, like, "canned" sounds that are in there, rather then having a basic good sound that I can alter. Is that an unfounded fear?

Thanks again for all your tips!
Also, fingbeagles, sorry to disappoint you, but I am actually living in a dorm on Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. I'm a Dutch guy doing fighter pilot training (which is another odd thing, in what is probably destined to be one of the busiest years of my life, I decide to pick up guitar playing again... lol)

WOW, no disappointment, just a random logical guess since SMU is only a few blocks from that GC, too cool, been on that base a couple times in the past, my company does work there sometimes, you need to know the forum rule once you get the guitar, no pics no guitar:D again congrats and welcome:)

You really need to try some out and see what you like imo. There are low wattage tube amps that can sound great at very low volumes, but a 40 watt HRD is comparable to a 100 watt solid state and is loud enough for big clubs. You have to crank it very loud to get a good sound. I have a 5 watt amp that can hang with a drummer. If you want to go tube then look at 5 to 15 watters tops.

Hope that helps some.

Went to the Guitar Show in Dallas today and tried some stuff out. Bottomline: I am not sure yet haha.

I walked in and pretty much the first thing I saw in one stand was a JP and a very nice purpleburst hardtail Morse Y2D, the latter for 1250 bucks. I almost bought it but refrained haha. I did play it however and it was very nice, on a Bad Cat amp, which was also nice but at 2800 dollars not in my budget range (yet).

I noted some of the suggestions you guys made and I ran across a whole bunch of Orange amps and I tried out the Orange Tiny Terror combo on a strat. I liked it quite a lot but I wasnt sure if the price they were asking there (900) is good or not. Also, while I liked the fact that with just three control knobs I could get a nice clean sound but also a bit more aggressive sound, not being able to switch on the fly with a footswitch or something kind of sucks :-/

I also played the Peavey Vypyr 75W. Must say I liked it quite a bit. They didnt have the pedal though which I would've liked to try out.
And I looked all over the show for the Egnater Rebel 20 but couldnt find it.

After spending a couple of hours browsing, seeing a few more nice Music Mans hidden here and there, I resisted the urge to pickup the Orange Tiny Terror + a 500 buck PRS SE Singlecut and went to go home again.

But on the way I decided to stop at the Lewisville Guitar Center to see if I could try the Vypyr again. Well they also had the 60W tube vypyr and it was pretty cool. I didnt see the foot switch though so again didnt try it.

I was almost on my way out when I saw they had a bunch of Egnaters including the Rebel 20. So I tried it with a PRS but I was actually a bit disappointed. It seemed to be really picky for volume. IE if i put it at low volume it was hit and miss with notes / hammer ons etc coming through loud or barely at all. And I thought I could actually get more difference between clean and driven tone on the Orange than on this one. Maybe I just didnt utilize it to the full extent.

So anyway I dont really know what to do yet haha. I heard something about the Mesa Boogie Lonestar I may have to check that out see if it's cool. I quite like the Vypyrs, if that pedal board gives good control over various sounds + wah and volume etc it may be a winner. Though i did find a thread on some forum where folks were having a lot of technical issues.

It's always something! Well sorry for all this rambling to tell you all that I still dont know what to get. Tips based on my story are still welcome obviously :)

Sorry boss :(

And no more amp discussion needed, I have decided to go and get one of those Blackstars.

Now just to wait for my axe to be finished and then there will be pics :)

I have a bit of a strange question perhaps,

If my Morse is scheduled to be ready in june, I have no idea how far along it is in production, but, would it still be possible to change it to a hardtail instead of the floyd rose?

If the answer is yes dont immediately do that but I am reconsidering if i really want a tremolo or not.

lol

If it's not possible anymore then no problem but if it is I may consider this and make a quick decision.

Thanks!

Tomcat,

Try the new Fender VM. It's a great tube amp but with some added basic effects. It's also more affordable than the HotRod series now. Good luck!
