I dont want to bum up other guitar companies (i know we all love the EBMM), but i am in the market for an acoustic. Real hard to get a quality piece of timber over here and may have to import one.

The best i can get my hands on is a Y@m@h@ compass series. CPX15 SA

Does any one play one of these?

Hope this thread is ok.

Cheers

Jonny.

I have an Albert Lee Maton acoustic. They also make a Tommy Emmanuel model as well. Might be a bit more expensive than the Yamaha

Hey Jonny....I just got an Ovation Baladeer a few weeks ago, and I love it. I'm not sure if you can get those where you live, but I'd recommend looking into them if you can. I wanted an acoustic that was as close to an electric as possible, so I wouldn't have to severely adjust to the difference in playing, and I'm really happy with the Baladeer.

I'd LOVE to see EBMM make an acoustic one day. In fact, Big Poppa, if you've got it in the works, please put me down for your first one!;)

Hey Colin, don't 'The Wiggles' play Maton guitars? (I have kids, and those guys are playing 24/7 at my house!) I love them and hate them at the same time.:)

Yeah they sure do, luckily my girls don't like the wiggles so I've been spared that torture. They have other way's of torturing me.

I saw Colin & his wife do an open air gig a few weeks back and I thought they were the new wiggles. I've never seen so many little kids dancing in my life. Although I must admit that Colin's Panterra like solo over Cold Spaghetti seemed a little out of place. :D

Well,
due to volume and my missus's suggestion, I just enetered the acoustic world myslef.
Best neck I could find (of ultimate importance with my EB MM Axis being my best buddy/fave guitar) was an Ovation 1778T. This comes in a rough finish (front kinda like the back) in red/black/pewter. It has a VERY electric guitar feel and even though it has very few sound holes it is LOUD unplugged.
I tried Martin,Taylor (not T5 though),washburn,Ibanez etc. and none felt like the Ovation. There was a HUGE difference (to my feel/ears) between a USA Ovation and an Import though.
Anyway, after all that I bought a different guitar LOL.
Got a deal (although bankrupted me LOL and now trying to sell more unused toys to recoup) on an Ovation 1778T-RF.
This is basically the same guitar but it is higher spec. with total flame job front and back. The cool thing about this one is that it is one of the first ever made by Ovation. Ovation have NO idea about paint really and especially about painting backs LOL. So, Hamer being next door/in same building as Ovation, they went to Hamer and got their custom paint guy to do the first 10-15 guitars by hand. I managed to buy one from the actual original painter (getting him to sign the back of headstock for me as think it is so cool). The flames "pop" much more than the later models which were outsourced for paint. Apparently not only did Ovation strike out with painting them themselves they also had BIG problems buffing them and ruined some as were so unacustomed to tricky paint jobs.
My vote, an Ovation 1778T.
Hope this helps,
Nick

Carvin's Cobalt guitars are very nice and amazingly priced. I consider myself to be someone with Taylor sensabilities when it comes to what I like in acoustic guitars. I've had a Cobalt 780 for about 3 years now and it fits my tastes very well. And it didn't cost so much that I'm afraid to take it out and play it.

The Cobalts are worth at least twice what you pay for them IMO. Other brands I tend to like are Larive and Takamine. But I'd put my Cobalt up against most acoustics up to the $1,200 range. It's that good.

I agree that Seagulls are excellent quality instruments. Their tone isn't up my ally though. Not enough highs. Not crisp enough. But good instruments if they fit your taste.

These are all grat guitars and i have tried them all, but i have trouble getting them over in the UAE. One i can get is the Yamaha. They have the CPX 15. Looks great, but it is sooooo hard to buy an acoustic "blind". If I order it, I have to take it.

HAve a look and tell me what you think. CPX15 A

Thanks for your time,

Jonny

I have a Martin D-15 an Ovation Balladeer and a 3/4 size Yamaha for travel.

The Martin is incredible and not too expensive - $700-$800 US. There's a perception that Martins are a fortune, but they make some great, solid wood guitars that are affordable: The 1,15,16,17 & 18 series guitars are all reasonable.

I got the D-15 because I play fingerstyle. After doing research and trying many guitars, I found out that solid mahogany and solid cedar tops are best for fingerstyle players. Mine has solid mahogany top, sides & back, and rings out loud and solid.

After getting the Martin, the Ovation sounds like a toy to me

I had a Yamaha when I first started playing in 1981, and it was good.

I hear what you're saying about local availablity, but can you order over the net? Musiciansfriend.com or Sweetwater.com have good prices, but I've never purchased a guitar internationally, so I don't know if that would work.

Good Luck.
