On my ray, I've always been under the impression that if I turn the volumn nob all the way down while the patch cable is plugged in, then it won't be draining the battery. Is this true? Or does it always pull juice from the 9volt when a patch cable is connected? Thanks in advance!

If your guitar is plugged in, the battery is in use. It has nothing to do with any of the pots. The jack is like an on/off switch.
