active vs passive - hiss

For those with the 30th and Big Al basses, do you find there is hiss when using active and no noise when using passive?

I'm referring to high freq noise (hiss) not 60 cycle hum or buzz. But thanks for sharing your experience.

I hear no hiss added when switching. Once upon a time I had a 2x10 with a tweeter that was at ear height -- and the slighest hiss was quite audible from that tweeter pointed right at my ear. Off-axis and is was normal.

When I hear hiss I check the rest of my signal chain after the bass. 100% of the time I find it there.

I have the tweeters dialled completely off on my cabs, so I don't get any high frequency hiss at all. With these SWR cabs I have in the past noticed some tweeter hiss when using active basses, so that's my guess as to what you are hearing. On my tweeterless Ampeg SB-12 tube combo there is no hiss at all when switching between passive and active with my Big Al SSS.

Well I have a 25th with the active bypass and NO there is no hiss, but that is explained in my reply to your other thread.

It AIN'T the bass it's your amp! lol

yes, but the gain and volume on the amp has to be at "insane" settings... ("these go to eleven, you know, that's one more")

If I turn up everything on my active basses to full, then I hear hiss. Now you may ask, "Who the heck would do that?". Well, I notice people who have played passive instruments typically turn everything on to full volume, full tone etc. When they pick up an active instrument they do they same, when what they should be doing is leave all tone controls in the middle and volume not more that say 70%. Then adjust tone controls (bass, mids, treble) up or down from the half position but not too much.

So, could this be the source of the hiss?

Doesn't matter if I go 75% or 100% on the volume knob of the instrument. But I usually go 75%
