Added Pick up

What do you guys think about the new stingrays coming out with the added pick up, either single coil or another humbucker. I recently became very fascinated with the idea of adding a jazz bass pick up to my 7 year old sting ray 5 and then adding a u retro pick up. However, my trusted guitar repair guy said he wouldn't do it because he didn't feel it was worth it and he said the pick up has to have a "phantom silencer coil." I don't know what this means, all I know is that I desperately want this procedure done to my bass. Has anyone ever added a pick up to a stingray?

Welcome to the forum!

Before I'd do any surgery I'd check out a StingRay H/S. The single coil from EBMM is excellent. I this rocks your boat, sell your current SR5 and buy an H/S. The big mod you are talking about would ruin any resale value your SR has.

But as often said here on the forum, it's your bass, do what ever you want to it.

+1 what Chuck said. The HS is a great set up if you like that nasal jazz tone...and it cuts like a hot knife through butter in a band mix....ask my guitarist he is still suffering after last week's rehersal.

For the cost of a JRetro, a (non-matching) pickup, and installation, you are better off putting a deposit down on a brand new SR5 with an HS config that was designed that way from the get-go. Then, spend the next 6 months figuring out how to pay the balance.

What you are describing is not "adding a pickup" to a bass you love. You are describing "changing irreversibly" a bass and killing any resale if you decide to get rid of it when it no longer is the bass you love.

You'll be hard pressed to find an aftermarket 5 string Jazz pickup that will balance well with the current EB humbucker.

Like a good mutt, personalized frankenbasses can be a great friend. I just don't think you'll get what you are looking for modding a SR5 with a JRetro/added aftermarket pickup.

Save yourself the headache, buy a H/S and the reason is this, you add a J Pickup you'll never find one to match the output of your Music man Pickup, Music Man Makes their own Pickups there for the Single J Looking pickup will match the H Pickup much better.

I don't think that's a bad idea, the hard part is getting a j pup that matches the output of the bridge hambucker. If that SR5 of yours is a keeper i wouldn't mind about resale value, maybe Marcus Miller was told the same before he modded his old jazz, and is not like those changes are non reversible.
A new HS Ray would do the trick but is not the same since the bridge pup can't get the sounds of a single H SR5 (paralell, single coil, series).
And make shure to get a hum cancelling pickup so you don't need a dummy coil.

I admire a player who is not afraid of modifying his instrument. I am just not good with tools and electronics My friend chopped part of bass and guitar body and glued them together to try to make one double neck guitar and he ruined two guitars by doing so
