@mtrejo: thank you for your input. the piezo is the next thing i'm not sure about. i mean it's definitely a very useful thing but i costs a bit. is it worth the price?

and what do you think about used instruments. i never considered this option so far...

I bought all my MMs used... saved me a lot of money. Two from Ebay... and two here from forumites.

I also have an AL HH. You can get some stratish sounds from positions 2 and 4 where the humbuckers are split. But if you're looking for twang I'd go for the maple neck and ash body.

@spudmurphy:
i see you have 3 wonderful albert lees, i envy you!
maybe you can tell me a little bit about the performance of the single coils at "higher" gain, maybe you can even give me some examples...i would be very pleased about :)

Thanks very much. I love my Al's.

I'm not a player who plays with a super amount of gain. I like to kick in a pedal to drive the amp harder and get my overdriven sound that way.I love the SSS - it's so versatile but that is also down to Piezo which I also love.
I don't have any sound samples - it's something I'll have to get around to doing one day.

It's not HSH anymore... I got a Bareknuckle Crawler in bridge- and a Seymour Duncan APH-2 in neck position now. It's got the same switching options like you get in an AL HH or ASS. I'm quite happy with that pickup combination. But I was never looking for 100 % Strat/Tele sounds.

@paranoid70: do you always use the bridge humbucker or how do the single coils work at the gain level?

Could just be a matter of personal preference, but I tend to always use the bridge pickup when playing songs with high gain. I like using the single coil pickups for clean channels. The one exception would be sometimes I like to use the neck single coil with gain for a melodic riff-y kind of solo (i.e. 'solo' in Born on the Bayou).

Yes, those barred chords sound rich, eh?

It is extremely versatile in my opinion. If you set it up, so you can roll up the tone when you're playing stuff on the bottom end, you're laughing. It IS a rock guitar too.

Hello guys,

yesterday i had the chance to play a ebmm luke with hss emg pick ups. the neck was perfect and the playability too. unbelievable, i've never felt something else before.
only the sound in the clean channel of the fender hot rod deluxe was not exactly what i'm looking for. after turning up the gain, the guitar sounded very thick and wonderful. but the clean sound was something like sterile...

I agree about the EMG pickups, not my cup of tea.
I have a LukeIII HSS config, which has the Steve Lukather DiMarzio Transition pickups (passive) and those single coils sound amazing in my opinion. If you get a chance, try that guitar. It's extremely versatile as well.

at the moment i absolutely don't know where i can that the chance to try that one, but i will keep on searching.
i'm dreaming of testing a luke with di marzio, albert lee sss, albert lee hh and silhouette special at the same time on the same amp. that will be perfect, so i can choose the right guitar for me :) i think that will stay a dream...

May be late chiming in, but Albert Lee HH will probably be the choice IMO. The classic feel works with your musical styles. But the humbuckers can do the heavy stuff. For strat tones, use position 4, and for tele style position 2. The feel of the guitar is so spot on for classic rock. And the neck pickup is huge so you can drop some sabbath. Visually, if you want to be classic and modern, maybe try to find a hlack one. I dont think anything with a single coil in the neck can do the modern stuff justice. Happy shopping!

hi. i live in vienna (austria). i only know one guy with a music man. it's a luke, i think 2. a kind of red finish, maple neck rosewood fretboard, hss emg pickups. i played it last time and again yesterday.
i do like it more and more. very easy to play, neck shape and frets are in a rather small but very comfortable size. maybe i should consider in taking a luke?
how do you experts see the differences in sound (especially clean tones) and playability (especially neck and fretboard) between luke and silhouette special (and maybe albert lee ss or hh)? are they comparable anyways?
