The biggest thing to get over is the difference in the neck profile. For me the hardest thing was giving the AL a chance at first because it's a C shape and feels much fatter in your hand. At first it will feel a lot fatter than it actually is when you compare it to the EVH/Axis. Once you get used to switching between the profiles (I only played my Axis/EVH guitars for years) you really won't notice much difference... Unless your 1 of those guys that claim the 1/32 if an inch missing from the width of the Axis neck compared to the EVH was life changing. In that case hopefully nobody puts a pea under your mattress... Lol.
I love my Al and think it's a great pairing for an Axis/EVH but it takes a minute to get used to swapping between the necks if you are like me and only played the Axis/EVH for a long period of time.

Granted I was getting over a stomach flu when I visited beej this summer, but I had no difficulty going from his Axis Super Sport to his ALs. (First time for me seeing one of each in the same room). I was aware of the axis asymmetric neck carve but I had no problem switching to the Als. Certainly no difficulty, at all.

I think it's easier to play an Axis for the first time coming from the AL (or a Silo Spec) than the other way. Once you adapt to the Axis neck profile as your main guitar everything feels a little off at first. I would be willing to bet that the Petrucci profile has a similar affect when you move to a more "standard" neck profile. (C or V shapes)

When I think of an Axis vs Albert Lee comparison, I actually first think of how similar they are.
The Albert Lee HH has the same pickups as the Axis.
Both of the necks are on the chunky side of, say...a Petrucci. They feel very similar to me.
What it comes down to, to me, is the body shapes. The Axis has a flat top and the Albert has the beveled top for arm comfort. The Albert Lee is a guitar that you can melt into the couch with. And, the all rosewood necks are incredible to see and feel.
I love, love, love the Axis, but if I could only have one of the two, I would pick the Albert Lee HH in a heartbeat.

Wow Bryan, wouldn't have seen that one coming.. But there is something about the HHAL that really hits the sonic sweet spot. You should play an Axis Sport though... Best sounding EBMM I've ever owned!

I know, Mat. I have always been a rabid, die hard Axis lover. I almost didn't want to reveal just how much I've grown to love the Albert Lee.

The difference between my Al's and EVH is soooooo slight. no problem switching back and forth.

I have no problem switching between my Axis (I know, it's not an EVH but the closest thing I have) and my AL's, however since the AL became my main guitar I find my JP almost unplayable because of the skinny neck.

I have both and have issues switching between them. To be honest, I prefer the ALHH neck profile! But the sound of the Axis guitars suits me slightly better. The ALHH still sounds killer though.
