hey guys
has anyone here changed a luke to Passive ?
any info would be great!
I've been toying with the idea for ages and after playing my Reflex model
I really want to explore more tonal qualities with passive pickups.
I'm not sure if they will all be the same setup but will still have to be high gain for my teramaze music for sure !
I'll keep u posted with my transformations when they get under way!!
:)
your thoughts would be great !
D
I'll probably keep the BFR emg ? not sure yet :)

Obviously, I'd suggest just change one of the three and see how you get on. Then decide what to do with the others. Your biggest problem will be deciding what pickups to go for and what Luke to put 'em into first! I presume you'll not butcher any guitar to get pickups to fit, or will that limit your options too much?

this seems to make the most sense. Change out one guitar and use that as the guinea pig. Once you find something you liken then change the other 2 guitars out.

This could be a long search as there are so many great pickups available now.

Dwells,
as a big fan of your playing and assuming (hopefully correctly) I know a little bit about the direction you want to go, I would suggest Bare Knuckle Black Dogs.
I do not subscribe to super high output pickups and high gain, as I want a more organic sound. These pickups are worth the cost and the Jensen cap on the tone really enhances your tonal palate. Just wanted to share my thoughts after doing about 7 pickup swaps last year in a luke and axis.
That's my 2 cents.
Keep on tearing it up,

I knew a guy who converted his with a bareKnuckle Crawler and two slowhands... sounded lovely. He's since sold the guitar and returned it to stock without issues so you can go back!

Yea there is tons of pickups out there and it's quite a daunting task to find the right pickup that will be YOU. Maybe you can try some of the high output DiMarzios to start off with and put in a high output double blade single into the neck. Maybe try something like the Breed in the pridge and Pro Track in the neck?

You can also go for Suhr Aldrich in bridge and two MLs in the middle and neck positions? Again, this will probably be a long journey hehe.

i dont want to buy a new guitar just yet, id prefer to just change pickups in 1-2 of my Lukes:), i will try just 1 first obviously but i cant see why they wouldnt sound amazing with the right pickups.
i know im limited by the size of the pickups holes but i think i should be able to fit in some seymour duncan hot rails in the necks and middle.
and No!! i wouldnt butcher the bodies ever hahaha:)
i might look into bare knuckles but ive heard mixed reviews about them.
at the moment the first setup i will be trying is SH-15 Alt 8 in the bridge and pearly gates and sh-1 in in the neck and middle, im still wondering if i will need to get new Pots etc?
Cheers

Deano,

I have to agree with what has been stated just try it in one and see what you think. If you like then proceed to another.

Good luck hope you find it; BTW EMG makes passive pick ups now that llok just like actives. If I ever get around to my project I will let you know what I think, the ones I have are MM-90 style to put in an AL.

That sounds like a pretty cool combo Dean. But yes you will most certainly have to change the electronics alltogether as the values are not the same for active and passive pickups. Regardless, you will make it sound awesome...and I think the main thing is that you will still sound like yourself no matter what pickups you use.

The DiMarzio site has a cool 'PickupFinder' application that can help narrow down the choices.
Also, a call or email to tech / customer service for any of the manufacturers may put you intouch w/ someone that can point you in the right direction.
