Am going for a 5-stringer. Which one is the best for me?

I haven't tried a Bongo but from the reviews here they must be pretty good. The shape will grow on you but If you can't get past that and like the SR5 you wouldn't go wrong with that.

I played a 5 string Ray for a while, but I recently got a Big Al 5SSS and the old Ray hasn't seen much action since. The 4 band EQ is killer, and the variety of tones you can get is amazing. Having the passive option is huge for me, since my band plays a lot of classic rock and oldies. For newer stuff, I hit the active button and tear it up. Just awesome all the way around. In fact, I'm trading my Ray for a fretless since I don't use it any more. I'm not a fan of taking up closet space with unused guitars.

I've tried several 5 strings, but ended up going back to
4s. In my experiments, the 20th anniversary stingray 5
always seemed to have the best tone, best B string,
and great feel. They come up on the classifieds every
once in a while.

Izzat the one with the figgered maple top and no PG ?
Cuz there's some sorta anniversary SR5 hanging locally
[good shop, musician-owned, non-commission staff].

Anywho, it's about $1000 at parkwaymusic.com [near
Saratoga Springs NY, but far enuf outa town to be not
snooty at all].

I like the bongo sound from what I heard in the vids, but I wonder if any of you can tell me where I can find one to play around Portland, OR or Seattle, WA (which are the cities I'm going to stay in while I visit the states)

I'd go for a single hummy Ray5 at first. You can upgrade -> SR5 HS -> SR5 HH, the same with the Sterling5 and so on

When I was in the process of switching over to a 5 string I had the opportunity to try several EBMMs (Stingray 5, 25th 5, Big Al 5, Bongo 5). I immediately fell in love with the neck of the Bongo 5. It felt flatter than the other necks and was easier/faster to play.

(Well, I must admit that I already favored the Bongo before I could compare it to the other 5ers. I simply loved the look of the Bongo 5)

I finally ended up buying a Bongo 5 HHP. My Stingray 4 is only collecting dust since then.

My next bass will either be a Bongo 5 H or a Big Al 5 SSS.

No. This was a band from an earlier post. I really liked it and wanted to share. I just noodle around on my own. Takes my mind off work, helps decompress in the wee hours of the morning after getting home after my evening shift is over........
