I played one at GC it sounded pretty decent. Was really fun to mess around with and play with but nothing beats the real thing IMO.

..i am running my guitars through a pod xt live (which i can highly recommend, especially with the metal pack) into an atomic full range valve amp, special designed for pods..

..before i ran it into a marshall, but the results are much better since i go into the atomic..

I have had an XT and FBV floorboard (which basically turns it into a Pod live) for some time, and it's one of the reasons that I started playing again!
True it will never beat the real thing but hey it will give you so much.
I run it through the power amps of my Marshall or Boogie. I have also plugged it into the front end of my AER acoustic.

Friends of mine have bought Boss/Behringer units which although have their strengths- always say that they are blown away by the POd when they hear mine.

Plug it into your computer via USB and Line 6 interrogates the Pod and will recommend updates etc which are so easy to do.

Get the XT and you won't be disappointed - someone on the forum was contemplating getting one, and I had some PM's from him - he loves it!!

Don't get sucked in by Line 6 detractors - the XT is good - it's very good!

I'm one of the first buyers of the line 6 pod X3 it's the new guy on the block ~I own/ed 2 pod xt lives 1 pod xt bean and one bass pod xt so i really think you get a great sound !I sold the 2 beans for the new x3 it's really cool claim is it has 2 completely independant channels so you can have any of the 2 models and run different setups! I think it's best to check out the website for how it works but HOLY cr@p it works nice I put a plexi model with a fender vibro lux and some misc effects and can nail SRV to a tee I may also state I've been a tube snob since I was able to afford one 20 years ago!I have a mesa boogie a marshall and a legacy with cabs just sitting here I can get tone 90% equal to the tubes and NOT have to blow my ears out with volume!I have one pod into a 2x12 genz benz with a crate powerblock power amp these things are a steal!and WAYY too loud for most gigs!i have the other into a genz benz 4x12 same as with another powerblock these things rip and no tube maintanance!the third and favorite is a pod x3 live into a 1500 watt pa out to speakers that have 2 15" 2 "10 and a horn talk about chunk!I set my nephew up with the same setup he always gets complements whan he plays out,the tones are in there but does need tweaking the factory ones aren't really what it's capable of but they really have SOOOmuch stuff in them it's a great deal!!Try them and work with the tone~ they work much better using just a power amp as opposed to running them thru a amp head, but they can sound pretty good that way ~just little things like noisegate adjustment can change the response and tone completely,I'm not saying they are better than tubes but they have 90% of the sound and 0% to upkeep!they are great to record into computers and have like 80 different amps!so to get real ones it's big $$$$the x3 also comes with bass pod x and vocal x so it's truelly a one stop for most people ~you can run a bass and guitar ~guitar/guitar~ or vocal /guitar ~or bass /vocal together using different models great for a home studio and with guitar amps like marshall mesa fender soldano vox etc modeled there's tons of setups for any type of player!
try it I think you'll dig em'!

I had a GT8 for about an hour, before boxing and returning it to the store. My Line 6 lasted a bit longer (a whole week), before selling it off.

yeah the pod xt sounds pretty damn good... i had one for a long time (and i still have the Line 6 GearBox Gold plugin)...

i used to be a huge amp modeler fanboy (and still am to some degree, i just won't use it on any of my real recordings anymore though)... my complaint with the Line 6 products (and probably all of the other modelers out there that i haven't had the chance to play with) is with the high gain models... they are great if you don't have anything to compare them to but they just don't react like a real amp

a pod xt through a power amp is a great way to get a really versatile live rig together without getting complex and without spending tons of money... (just remember to turn off the speaker emulation)

Wow, the opinions run the gamut! Well if I had the money and space I might consider buying a diezel herbert and maybe a rectifier, JC120, JCM800 and so on - with all the effects - but I was curious if running it through a real tube power amp if it will make sound warm and punchy and stuff -

I think modeling is great for some but does nothing for others. I ran the GT through my usual 50 watt tube amp, and while it was a fun new toy, giving some new flavors and colors, it all lacked the UMPH! of going straight into the amp. I really wanted to like the unit, or I wouldn't have bought it. It just didn't do it for me.

I know I'm stating the obvious but has any of your mates got a Pod?
Maybe you could borrow it and try it out on your own rigs?

As long as you are prepared to say to yourself" OK it's a modeller, it's never gonna be like the real thing but damn it's close" then you won't be disappointed.

With the PodX3 out there should be lots of Pod XT's on E bay?

But you have to be careful setting it up - I ran it though a Fender amp once and it sucked - bad! - because I hadn't set it right!!

Another alternative is to get one of those new line 6's designed with Reinhold Bogner - I tested one at GC (the 2x12 combo) and was totally blown away - really nice amp.

Check out the Zoom 7.1UT and the 9.1UT - they feature all tube preamps with higher bit rate sampling than anything else out there. The sound is truely great - and I personally despise modelling.

Zoom stuff is pretty darn impressive. I picked up an RT-123 drum/bass kit and am having a blast with it, both as a teaching/training aid (great for timing) and just for jammin' fun. Very analogue and real sounding.

just fyi... those zoom units do not have all tube preamps...

they have, what sounds like, an additional gain stage (or a few) for some 12AX7 harmonics on top of the all DSP amp model (not to take away from the zoom, but just to get the facts straight)

...zoom used to be absolutely terrible toy crap but that was years ago, it looks like they've come a long way, i haven't tried this thing, i'd be curious to hear what it sounds like

BTW, there are a lot of guys out there who swear by this one particular high-end modeler... the fractal axe fx... Fractal Audio Systems (i've heard a lot of people talking about it but i've never tried that thing either, it's also pretty rare and expensive though)

I love my PodX3, it sounds amazing through the poweramp of a Fender HRD. It doesnt sound exactly like the real deal, but it does sound exactly like a recording of the real deal. I've heard alot of A/B samples of the real amps and the modeled ones and it's almost impossible to tell the difference. I like Line6 because they model the good and the bad of the amps, instead of just making approximations of what they think sounds good.

Here's a short video of my old PodXT, a Sub, and the HRD.

I have a Pod XTLive which I am running through a Crate Power Block (straight into the power amp section) into a Framus 2x12" cab loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's.

I am doing the cover thing as well and I can highly recommend this combination.
In terms of versatility and sound this is really a very good combination.

Of course, an old Plexi in excellent condition or a lovely Blackface Deluxe can take you straight up into tone heaven, but to me the Line6 stuff is a good alternative, not only moneywise!

It all depends on what you're aiming for: if you're looking for the ultimate, say, Marshall tone, my advice is to go and get one, BUT:

if you're looking for versatility, live AND in the recording studio, I would go for that Line6 stuff. Only make sure to spend some time on creating and tailor your sounds so you can really benefit from that piece of gear.

Currently I am producing a new demo CD with my band, and we're doing cover stuff exclusively. With just my EBMM Luke II and the XTLive I can nail all the guitar sounds I need. PM me and I can send you MP3 examples if you like.

One more thing: that combination I am using is LOUD! The Crate is small but those 150 Watts it delivers are really SERIOUS :D
