AMP question for JP6

Hey guys,

my friend is now amp shopping for his new JP6. I haven't shopped for amps too much in the range he's looking for. Any suggestions in the $500-600 range? Preferably something with HIGH Gain, almost a metal sound but more mids. I've had zero luck finding a Trademark 60 to try out, so we're open to other options.

There is another Peavey series oh the Vintage Class-A Palomino V32 Combo (has a nice Blonde Tolex w/rattan grille).

used 5150's go for around 500-600 I think (talking combo again).

Krank has some small tube combo's.



Or is he after a head/cab setup?

I'm unsure why a Flextone III would be out of the question...you have to literally be a tool to not get a good sound out of those things. They don't even need to be tweaked that much....just shut off the cabinet models. IMHO the trademark sounds awful. A buddy of mine had one and it was always fizz city we even recorded with it a bunch and no matter what we ran through it, and how it was set it always sounded like a big muff going to tape...see your dude could easily cop a FTIII on the bay for way less than his price range...plus he'd have some decent effects and some similar amp tones to the ones JP uses. I'm just questioning the motivation because you're not really going to fiind something that sounds better in that price range...especially if you're looking to go tube based. I have a lot of experience in this area and I'm not trying to steer you guys incorrectly...

If your friend can find a used Mesa F-30 at that price, I can tell you that it sounds pretty good for the kind of sound you're asking for. I've got one, and I'm pretty happy with it.

As long as we're talking used Mesa amps, one of the old Caliber series or Dual Caliber series might be great. I have an old .50Caliber+, which I love. The DC-5, which replaced it brought some improvements that I always wanted in the .50. The DC-5 has independent tone controls for both lead and rhythm, which I always wanted. The DC-5 seems to handle the low end better due to a bigger enclosure.

I wish I could tell you for sure how much those amps cost, though.

The DC5 is nice. I had one but I wiashed it was a head for years...

Actually something else your boy could do...if he can find an old caliber or DC, or even an F series (I generally avoid the 30 watters since the EL84's aren't really that great pushing much low end...6l6's or el34's generally do my ears better there)...is get an avatar speaker cab...the 2x12's are cheap and they're loaded with some niceass speakers for less than $300...just another option set for you....

I tried a used Rivera Pubster 25, which IIRC was in your friend's price range. Man, nice sound. That might be one to try if you see one.

I love that amp with both my JP6 and Axis Sport.
