I don't know why, but something about this thread makes me dizzy...

Get what you truly want, Eric. Otherwise you will just spend more money moving from one amp to another wishing you had just bought what you wanted in the first place. If it is too loud, you'll figure out how to deal with it...

Thank you

Hello Eric,

I'm so happy that you found a nice 5150 head. That's wicked pissa. A power attenuator can be used if you can't get the amp to sound great at bedroom volumes.

When will the head arrive?

I had the same exact head for a few years. It was one of the things I sold to get a down payment for my house, or else I would have kept it. You will be very pleased with it.

Tollie, did you remeber it being good at home levels? Im not too worried becuase like i said i played the stack at GC on 1 and it sounded great. I just want to get some good reverb and delays going!

Im going to eventually get individual pedals for verb, and delay , all i have for effects right now is a line 6 pod 2.0, and i wonder if it would work good through the loop? I would only use the effects and no models, even though uou cant shut off the models, but there is one called tube preamp that is pretty transparent, almost completely. I used to use this method with my marshall jtm 30 combo and it sounded great, and the pod even has a little noise gate! But my question is, hows the quality of the effects loop on this head? Is it great and sounds the same as without it engaged? Or does it color or effect the tone in some adverse way? I doubt it though.

I had to sell mine after about 6 months because I couldn't get a good bedroom volume. This was a first run 5150, right after they came out in the 90's so I have no idea if that aspect of it ever changed. Loved the sound of the amp, but after books and pictures fell off the walls, I had to let it go. LOL!

I lived in an apartment back then and my landlord was a retired elderly lady living below me. No, I could not get that saturated tone "as is" at low volume. You and I play the same and sound the same, so I know you will be thrilled with the amp on 3. I bought a power attenuator and then it sounded absolutely amazing at whisper soft volumes. That is the best, no the only way to go.

They can be a little pricey. The Dr.Z and the Weber are both around $220 new. I would buy a used one. Mine is a Tom Scholz from the 80's, like this one. They sell for around $100 used.

But i will say i remember playing it at GC at about 1 or 2 and it sounded great, but im sure it will sound better louder. I also wanted to have this amp in case i ever get the chance to blast this thing, i also have a balcony that in the summer i might roll it out there and have sone fun! I live right on broadway in the city so it out to be a fun time lol. But in all seriousness i will play it at 1 or 1 1/2 most of the time. And i know it will sound good. I watched a bunch of youtube vids that sound great on low vol because i can still hear the pick hitting the strings! And the amp still sounded good. But the attenuator sounds like a plan.

Tollie what would be the best attenuator? It would be way down the road anyhow, since i still have to buy a cab, and not to mention pay off the amp, but that will be done in a couple weeks. Now to be certain, the attenuator goes in between the head and cab? And you can turn down the vol on the attenuator and blast the amp?

Eric,
You inquired about a noise gate. I had one that really suppressed the hum & all the bad stuff. Only problem is that it really suppressed my signal and my tone suffered greatly. Mine was the MXR smartgate. I sold it and don't incorporate one any more. Just my 2ccents.

I have a feeling this amp will sound great right out of the box. But now im goin gear crazy to have a good rig. I want it to be quiet but loud when i want it to be. And i want no hum or buzz when not playing. I know these amps are feedback monsters, i remember when i turned my guitar vol all the way up without playing a note it fedback, but i just will ride my vol knob, and up it when playing and down it when not.

I just think that this amp would sound the same on low vol because the whole tone of the amp is preamp distortion, not power tube breakup. The 6l6 power section of these are basicly designed to run clean, and just be a PA for the pre, right? So it should sound the same on 1 or 6 but of course a loud ampsounds awesome with all the air that its moving!

Tollie that is good advice! I will try that, also what about a noise gate? Does it make alot if hum? Or buzz?

No, you won't need a noise gate.

I like the thd but they are more expensive than the weber. Weber makes good quality stuff and only $220 new.

Yes, the power attenuator goes between the head and the cabinet. You blast the amp and turn down the volume on the attenuator.
