Thanks for all the replies so far. Looks like I'll have a lot of stops to make.
Just to address a couple of things, I have tried a few modelers on my current amp, and while they've gotten me closer, I'm still not completely happy with the results.
Portability and space are also issues that I probably should have mentioned last night. I'd really prefer some sort of combo, or at least a small cabinet. I'm working with a 12-by-12 bedroom here that has a queen bed, all of the normal bedroom furnishings and a couple of guitar cases, too.Also, while I won't be gigging with it, I will be packing it up fairly regularly to take to my brother's house to jam.
I share your thoughts on most modelers (and I regularly use various modelers to practice, so I'm not just biased against them) but I'm very excited to hear the new Peavey Vypyr when it comes out. It looks like it could be the best small modeling combo yet, and two of the models have a tube power stage. May be worth waiting to see if they end up being great, because the price is really nice.

Tech 21 Trademark 30s are great little amps. SUPER versatile, although only 1 channel. BUT, if you aren't planning to gig, the 14 pounds is unbeatable.

I have a ton of amps...and the one that I have the most fun with is a 99 dollar epiphone valve jr. combo. 5 watts/class a.
What makes it so fun for me, besides the 100 dollar price point, is the fact that it only has one knob...volume (and it's surprizingly loud! it's a capable amp for small gigs, by my ears I would equate 5 watts tube to 25 or 30 watts solid state)
There's nothing to hide behind, so it really makes you a better player when you can't compensate with 'verbs, effects, etc...I actually hated it at 1st for that reason, it's like my god! Is my playing really that sloppy?! Well, it doesn't lie.
Just spending a week with that amp totally flipped the script with how I approached playing...
The real fun starts when you put a $14.99 danelectro o.d. pedal in front of it, your chops better be clean...or everyones gonna know you didn't do your homework!

I just ordered an Atomic 212-50 for my Pod X3 bean. I've never tried one but I have great only good things. I hope it does not bite me in the butt lol

I'm also in quest for an amp in the near future. Of course I have to save up. INstead of getting a great amp I've gone through 4 EBMMs hahaha.
Anyway, has anyone here actually played through a Genz Benz El Diablo? I hear really good things about them and the price tag is not that crazy at all. I have MAJOR GAS to get this one with a nice 2x12 cab.

They lost one of their manufactures from over seas. They are still in business but it's taking some time (weeks to months) to deliver an amp.

The boogies are very versatile do it all ,clean ,crunch and filth. Plus you have switchable channels ,reverb and e.q. record loop and main record channels.Plus a low power switch. The Hiwatt has none of that,but it has a purer tone,just add pedals to create a superb tone.Or a pod to make a insane atomic type amp. Both great amps but totally different.

Yeah. I generally like my F-30. I think I'd like the cleans from an F-50 more based on what I heard out of the F-100. Unfortunately, they replaced the F-Series with the Express series, which I really dislike. It's just not for me.
I think the F-30 would be a great amp for what the original poster is looking for.

I'm cheap and live in an apartment with paper thin walls, so I bought a Line6 flextone III XL
Yeah, so it's not tube-tastic, but it sure makes a lot of cool sounds, has amp/cab modelling, mic modelling and MIDI in/outs to allow you to hook up your PC and fiddle with the tone via software.
OH.. and it was a LOT cheaper than the spiffy looking Mesa's at GC.

I'd get the Tech21 Powerengine and use a modeler of choice. The Powerengine is a non-tone-coloring powered speaker essentially. It'll take any modeler you may like and amplify it loudly enough for good tones in your house, and be loud enough to jam w/ your brother.
I had a 50/100 watt tube amp and after having kids found that there was no reasonable volume to use that at home.
Do I miss the tube feel? Yes. But that's offset by the fact that I have my POD programmed to get me plenty of practical sounds. Plus, if I find a new modeler in the future that I like more, the Tech21 Powerengine still works with it and updates are super cheap. And the whole rig is light. No more back pains moving it.
