Im having a bit of trouble with my amp, so was wondering if anybody could shed some light on it.
Ive got a GK 1001rb ii and neo 212 cab, the sound is distorting but only at low levels, i played it at rehearsals last night and it seemed fine when turned up loud, ive sent the 1001rb ii back for repair (i originally thought it may be the head at fault) but they sent it back saying there was nothing wrong. Ive checked the woofers for tears and loose connections etc but they look ok.
Heres a youtube vid of me messing about so you can here it, (sorry for the ****e playing im just noodling about so you can here it):-

YouTube - Busted amp

the cabs still under guarantee so its no problem to send back but just wondered if anybody had any ideas before i did send it back as it would be a major inconvenience.

Thanks

Are you able to determine if the distortion is isolated to just one of the drivers? It might just be a wire resting on one of the cones, and it goes away when you turn up the volume due to increased excursion of a driver. It also may be just a loose connection, pull the driver sand reseat the connection. That scenario happened to me once with a combo I owned.

John is right. But first... if your bass is active make sure to change the battery!

tried all that, the first thing i did was change the batteries, i swapped amps and cabs last night and the amp seemed fine all-though i couldn't turn it up to much as the cab i tried it on was a lot less powerful, however thats beside the point as it does it when its turned down anyway.
ive just took the woofers/drivers out and checked the connections, played it with the speakers out to see if its one or the other, but they both do it. very odd and annoying at the same time.
not to worry its all guaranteed so it doesn't cost me anything to send it back its just going to be a pain in ass.

thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.

have you tried setting everything flat and backing the front-end gain off?

Not sure what that'll tell you but figured worth mentioning.

You could take the head to a local music store (guitarcenter?) and tell them you are checking out cabs with your set up and see if its your head once and for all... My 2 cents it sounds like a speaker prob... Good luck!!

A very similar thing happened to my drummers Bass amp a few weeks ago (I've been accused of busting that amp a few times ).

I believe we determined that there was something wrong with one of the 4 speakers and he had it replaced. It definitely wasn't the head, it was the cab. Put your ear up to the cab and see if it seems like the buzz is coming from one speaker specifically.

Right, I sent the amp back to thomann in Germany (where I bought it from) they have told me the voice coils have burnt out in both speakers and the guarantee does not cover that so it's going to cost me 380 euros to repair it. What I want to know is how on earth could this happen on an almost new cab (and amp) which are perfectly matched for each other.
Has anyone ever had something like this happen.
Obviously I'm going to kick up a wright stink before I hand over any money, the amp and cab have only been used at rehearsals once week for a couple of months and were not even turned up that much (the thing was loud at the volume not even halfway), they have told me the speakers have been overcharged and that's why they have burnt out, I've no where near overcharged them.
I've emailed gk directly they have told me to contact my local distributor which is polar audio in the uk, I don't know how they could help if I bought it Germany, but I've contacted them anyway.
Not a happy bongoloid at the moment

How do you have your BASS eq set? Do you crank the bass/mids/treble etc? That could play a role of how th speakers were overcharged. I'm not an engineer, but have had dealings for the past 30 years with blown speakers.

No, nothing cranked, usually keep everything flat but with a little tweak here and there, nothing drastic. Polar audio just mailed me back the guy there is in agreement with me that the cab is well within it's limits on that amp so he is gonna talk to gk tommorow. Fingers crossed they can sort something out

Ladies, as much leeway as possible is given on what are clearly off-topic (that is, non-EBMM) threads, and I certainly feel for the OP with his amplifier/cab troubles. This has been open long enough to get some decent advice and let's all hope for a happy finish, I mean 'ending', but there is no EBMM content so let's close it. No harm, no foul, no hard feelings, but we need to remember this is the EBMM forum.

Thanks for your understanding -

Jack
