If your band is running everything through the PA, then a 5-watt amp is all you need; a good 20 watt combo, like a Deluxe Reverb or a Mesa Boogie .22 Calibre will give you all the stage volume you'll ever need - and they are a lot easier to transport.

I know big amps are macho, but once you've grown up all you really need is the tone.

+1 for the Boogie 22. It gives you very very good tone at bedroom volume, as on stage.
I use mine both ways. When playing with my band live I use the stack, because I have more possibilities tonewise.
But when I have to do an extra job, as stand-in, I always use my .22 and a Fulldrive.
More than enough tone (most of it comes out of your fingers anyway) and more than enough volume!
There are more combo's with which you can choose between 15 or 50 Watts eg.
In that way you have a compact system and always good tone, without the use of an extra tool, as a loadbox is.

I have a Crate Palomino V32 that works great at low volumes and I've used it at shows. Really nice clean tone and pretty decent dirty (gain) channel.

You can check out the reviews -> Crate Palomino V32 112 Combo: Harmony Central User Reviews

This is not me but it does represent some of the tones [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D28dWjt1euM&feature=related"]YouTube - V-series Crate tube amp w/ Greenbacks... a better Marshall?[/ame]

I have the import model (1x12) that I got off eBay for $200.
