The question is why? I could understand if it was from another guitar company and a 1 out of a 100, But all MM's rock and this is (a): either a fashion statement or (b): no other EBMM around to play. Hopefully it was (b)

Unfortunately not (b). Here is where I originally saw a pic of the Black Ray. There are shots of him using a Honeyburst Ray as well in Melbourne.

Um the tuning isn't the issue. How does he adjust the volume and tone?

That is a travesty, and needs to be retired!

don't know what about you - tunning is quite an issue for me.
anyway, you can see the cable is going to the back of the bass so either the preamp was moved to a carving at the back or the pickup was wired directly to the output jack (in which case very low output will be produced).
either way it's a horrifying image, this bass deserves a proper burial.

i think some pictures have appeared here of this bass before. He broke it at the body joint in stage antics. My blue dawn ray has the same body joint position. The worst one we ve seen was the lady gaga big al contraption.

there's still too many good years in it to not play it.

easy to say when it's not your bass.

I can assure you the guy who owned this bass didn't think like you:
