easy to say when it's not your bass.

I can assure you the guy who owned this bass didn't think like you:

easy enough to say when it is my bass and I can't afford a new one.

and even easier when I see pictures of bassists for major acts still rocking out on such a bass.

I believe the bassist for Linkin Park can get any bass he wants and doesn't have to rock a smashed wreck unless it's a matter of "fashion statement" which somehow eludes my understanding.
mind you he could rent a bass if for some reason he went touring with only one bass and it broke in two due to some "act of god". I got the feeling that one phone call to SLO would get him a backup from the nearby GC or the local international distributer.

btw, the bass in the pic I posted - it got smashed by a crackhead during a live show, it was it's owner's only bass (at least with that band) and a fundraising gig was held in order to purchase a replacement.

are they 3 piece bodies cuz,it looks like it may have been broken and not sawn........

there have been pics or links to this posted before including one with the section of bass missing in this pic still attached but only just. Basically its a body joint but the bass has taken a massive hit on stage. Not sure whether this pic is of the same show or whether he decided to keep the bass for some reason. Doesnt he play sr5 as well? On the question of body pieces some do have 3. My blue dawn sr4hh has two joints on the line of the bottom and top horns.

^^ What is wrong with that guy?

it happened last year in Israel during an indy fest in the Negev desert.
a complaint to the police was filed but the guy was found within hours when attendent of the festival posted his pics all over the net.
his dad found out and offered the guy who's bass was trashed a compensation and presumably claimed his son has some issues which are treated professionaly.

I just had the mental picture of the teacher from south park saying to the children " oh kay drugs are bad" and using this as an image to show the side effects. Painful pictures.

Back to Linkin Park:

I've seen a recent LP show on MTV HD about a week ago, and Phoenix certainly can afford enough basses! He kept swapping instruments for almost every song in the show, almost all of them were EBMMs, and that broken black 'Ray was among them. He played it only on one song, but I can't remember which one. My guess is that it either has to do with the lyrics / message of the song, or that it is otherwise modified for a certian sound.

I think it's cool he keeps playing such an instrument. It's a statement to how you stick to what you like regardless of what people think and how much money you have.

Well that's all cleared up now then. It was (b) Fashion Statement.

it might just be one of those basses that just plays so good and you cant realy describe it. i always thought that these famous musicians can afford whateve they want, so why not have a bunch of different instruments?

if i had a bass that just played so sweet then i would keep playing it if it was in that condition too!

Maybe BP has caved to pressure an this is the new "relic" line of basses they plan to launch at NAMM? I can see it now... Destroyed Rays, Bongos, Sterlings...
