Charlie Brown was walking along the sidewalk kicking at stones on a hot and humid August eve. If he were here in person he would tell you that this was the type of heat that made him feel as if he were swimming. (Now we all know that Charlie Brown is even worse at swimming than he is at kicking the football, so the heat in all likelihood made him feel as if he were drowning). The only saving grace for poor old drowning Charlie Brown was his hallucination of The Great Pumpkin.
The Great Pumpkin is a mystical being that on Halloween night rises from the most sincere pumpkin patch in the land, and gives away toys to all the good little children in the world.
Now Charlie Brown was a bit surprised with this hallucination - not only was it not yet Halloween, but he didn't even believe in the Great Pumpkin, his friend Linus did! Seeing the Great Pumpkin just a few houses ahead of him, he began to run and chase the Great Pumpkin, trying to catch him and show him to Linus. Unfortunately there was a football in the very first lawn Charlie was running through. As he went to kick the football out of the way he slipped, went flying through the air, and landed on his head.
Knocked out cold, he began to dream, and dream, and dream.
He dreamed that he was at home, surfing the internet like Snoopy surfed the sky with the Red Baron. He found a website called Google and typed in "the Great Pumpkin" only to see himself on internet video, in a pumpkin patch with Linus and Lucy! They, all three, were waiting for the Great Pumpkin.
And suddenly he was inside the video with Linus and Lucy.
The clock struck midnight, there was a peal of thunder! the sky turned black! and the pumpkin patch began to emit a strange orange glow. The largest pumpkin in the middle of the patch began to hover in front of them, and rapidly grow in size. As Charlie Brown stood there staring at the pumpkin with his eyes wide and his mouth dropped open, Lucy yelled "It's the Great Pumpkin!" and turned to belt Linus in the arm. Luckily for Linus he had just fainted and was collapsing to the ground. Unfortunately for Charlie Brown, Lucy's follow through caught him on the tip of his jaw, and down he went. Out for the count.
Knocked out cold, he continued to dream, and dream, and dream.
Now the Great Pumpkin was chasing him! Charlie was running down the sidewalk and he slipped and fell. Landing on his back, he put his hands in front of his face to try and hold off the inevitable. As the Great Pumpkin rose above him as if to squash him, it began transform!
The stem turned from a green into a dark brown, and the two tones of the Great Pumpkin's skin separated from one another, becoming two round masses, which slowly flattened out. The stem grew and grew, and became so thin that when it broke, it broke precisely in half.
The round, flat masses began to spasm, as if a creature were inside struggling to get out. With one final spasm, the masses suddenly distorted, and fell to the grass on either side of Charlie Brown.
